Doris Elaine (Lindblad) Storlien was born in Madison, MN on March 21, 1933 to Melvin and Myrtle (Bothun) Lindblad. She grew up on a farm in rural Dawson, MN as the oldest of 5 children.
Doris was baptized as an infant and was confirmed in 1946 at Dawson Covenant Church. She attended country school in Maxwell Township and graduated from Dawson High School in 1951. After high school, Doris attended one year of teacher’s training at Madison Normal School in Madison, MN. She taught in Lac qui Parle County country schools, including District 18, District 7 and District 854 from 1952-1963 before she was hired by the Clarkfield, MN school district in 1963. Doris also earned her teaching degree from Mankato State University.
Doris married Valgean Wendlien Storlien on December 18, 1954 at Dawson Covenant Church. They farmed in different areas of the county before making their home on their farm in rural Madison, MN where Valgean farmed and Doris continued to teach at Clarkfield Elementary School until her retirement in 1991. During those years, Doris liked to stop by the “Lindblad” farm for a visit on her drive from Clarkfield to Madison at the end of the school day. The After Five Supper Club was a favorite place to be as well and many family dinners and celebrations were held there. Over the years, Doris and Val spent a lot of time attending various school and church events in support of their nieces and nephews. They also loved to buy and trade vehicles for the newest models. The farm was always important to Doris, and she enjoyed being involved in the farming business with Val.
Doris and Val moved into an apartment in Dawson in 2015. During their years in Dawson, they enjoyed drives to check on their farm, visits with family, and pizza parties and games with great nieces and nephews. When Valgean moved into the Johnson Memorial Care Center in early 2019, Doris would visit often for Bingo and coffee. Doris moved into the Care Center as well in late 2019. She appreciated having her own room overlooking the courtyard and loved any visits from family and friends. She planned her lunches so she could enjoy her favorite daytime drama and also watched church services on t.v. The separation from family during the COVID-19 pandemic was difficult, but Doris continued to enjoy visits through Zoom along with phone calls during that time.
