Ada "Shelly" Olson, formerly of Montevideo, died on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Brookview Manor Nursing Home in Brookings, SD at the age of 95. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 1:30 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Montevideo with Rev. Gwen Bohlke officiating. Interment will be in the Milan Methodist Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday. Ada V. (Broderson) Olson was born on March 5, 1917 in Britton, SD to Carl and Mabel (Stevens) Broderson. At a young age Ada was adopted by her step-father, Alfred Shelstad. The family moved to Appleton, MN, where Ada attended school and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. Ada was a nanny for the Dr. V.M. Hanson family in Appleton for awhile. On September 26, 1937 she was united in marriage to Arthur W. Olson of Milan, MN, and they were blessed with three daughters. They continued to live in the Milan area and farmed until retirement. Ada also worked for a time as the Manager of the Milan Bakery. They were members of the Milan United Methodist Church and were youth leaders for many years. Ada also taught Sunday School and held several offices in the W.S.C.S. After retirement they moved to Montevideo, MN and became members of the United Methodist Church. They celebrated over fifty years of married life before Arthur's death in 1994. Ada moved from Montevideo to Brooking, SD about five years ago, and was currently a resident at the Brookview Manor Nursing Home. Ada was lovingly called "Shelly" by her family and friends. She loved to entertain and always had lunch ready to serve anyone who came to visit. She enjoyed quilting and made many quilts for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, reading and was an excellent cook. She is survived by two daughters: Barbara (and Ken) Barthel of Clear Lake, MN and Nancy (Sheldon) King of Brookings, SD; a son-in-law, Douglas Gjerset of Sauk Rapids, MN; four grandchildren: Darren (Beth) King of Chicago, IL; Kristin (Corey Hurlbut) Gjerset of Sauk Rapids, MN; Heather (Michael) Powell of Baltimore, MD; and Karin Gjerset of Sauk Rapids, MN; four great grandchildren: Taya and Chloe Hurlbut and Alexandra and Elijah Powell; a brother, Arthur (Dawn) Shelstad of Odessa, MN; a sister-in-law, Della Shelstad of Wayzata, MN and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, her husband Arthur in 1994; a daughter, Dianne Gjerset; two brothers, Melvin and Walter Shelstad and a sister-in-law, Bertha Shelstad.
