Alice Gronewold

October 3, 1921 — November 28, 2009

Alice Gronewold of Franklin, MN and formerly of rural Montevideo died Saturday, November 28, 2009 at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia, MN at the age of 88. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. Rev. Tedd Rieke will officiate and interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday afternoon and evening at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo with the family present from 5-7:00 and a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Alice Annette (Frerichs) Gronewold was born October 3, 1921 in Ostfriesland, Germany the daughter of Rikus and Ayeltdine (Reiter) Frerichs. She emigrated with her family in November of 1924 and moved in February 1925 to a farm north of Clara City, MN. She was united in marriage with Harm Gronewold in 1941. They farmed in Havelock Township, Chippewa County, MN. Harm died February 15, 1951. Alice continued to operate the farm with her family after his death. She lived on the farm until moving to Clara City and Montevideo before moving to the Franklin Health Care Center. She was a long-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was active in circle, ladies aid, and quilting. She also enjoyed needle work, having coffee with the ladies, and family gatherings. Alice did a lot of traveling and she had a special love for her animals. She is survived by her son, Alvin (and Judy) Gronewold of Montevideo, MN; a brother, Menno (Margene) Frerichs of Maynard, MN; a daughter-in-law, Gladys Nelson of Montevideo, MN; five grandchildren: Jeff Gronewold, Brian (Tanya) Gronewold, Coni (Lynn) Webster, Barb (Mark) Petersen, and Alan (Rebecca) Gronewold; six great-grandchildren: Brittany, Ashton, and Ella Rose Gronewold, Alissa and Brett Webster, and Leah Petersen; and two sisters-in-law: Edna Frerichs of Chico, CA and Eldred Frerichs of Maynard, MN. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Harm; two sons: Richard and Peter; three brothers: Harm and Henry Frerichs and one in infancy; and two sisters: Annie Frerichs and Sylvia Cronen.
