Allan Schmitt

July 6, 1949 — January 15, 2019

Allan John Schmitt passed away  on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Rice Care Center & Therapy Suites in Willmar after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 69.

Visitation will be held  from 9:00 - 10:15 AM on Saturday, January 19, 2019  at Anderson - TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo with a prayer service beginning at 10:15.  Military Honors will follow the service and burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Madison.

Allan John Schmitt was born on July 6, 1949 in Madison, MN to Henry and Virginia (Richard) Schmitt.  He attended school in  Madison.  Allan entered the U.S. Army on March 4, 1969.  He served in the Vietnam War and returned to Minnesota with a National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendations Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and a Purple Heart.  He was united in marriage to Mary Haukos at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Madison.  Allan worked in a variety of jobs throughout his life including: construction, dairy store and VFW manager.  The family lived in Canby for 30 years before relocating to Montevideo in 2009 to be closer to family.

Allan was a lifelong member of the VFW and the Disabled Veterans of America. He enjoyed many hobbies and activities.    In  early years he played pool, darts and bowled.  He was an excellent pool player.  In later years he enjoyed gardening, landscaping, collecting eagle sculptures and casual trips to the casino. Everything Allan touched would grow and he was often sought out by family and neighbors for his green thumb.  He loved being with the neighbor guys and visiting and solving all the “world’s” problems.   Family will remember Allan’s love of woodworking and making furniture  for the family out of diamond willow.  Most of all Allan loved being a grandpa and spending time with his grandchildren.  He was the “grandpa taxi” for the grandchildren and a supporter in all the events that grandchildren participated in at school and the community.

Cherishing Allan’s memory are his wife of 46 ½ years, Mary; children: Michelle (Chad) Mortenson  and children, Raven, Kylee, and Camryn of Montevideo, MN, Michael (Melissa) Schmitt and children, Riley and Macie, of Montevideo, MN, Tony Schmitt of Bismarck, ND; brother: Larry (Irene) Schmitt of Palatine, Il; sister: Kathy (Bill) Bungarden of Madison, MN; numerous nieces and nephews as well as other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Virginia; and an infant brother, Dennis and step-father, Alvin Streich.

Blessed be his memory.
