Allen Larson

Allen Larson, of the Big Bend/Hagen area, died on Monday, August 15, 2011 at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 60. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at Big Bend Lutheran Church with Rev. Cathie Rhodes officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday afternoon and evening with the family present from 5 - 7 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Allen Juleen Larson was born on November 22, 1950 in Montevideo to Juleen and Delores (Swennes) Larson. He was baptized and confirmed at Big Bend Lutheran Church. He attended rural Big Bend School and graduated from Milan High School in 1968. He attended and graduated from Southwest State College in Marshall, MN in 1972. On July 15, 1972, he was united in marriage to Rita Determan at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Allen served in the National Guard from 1973-78. Following practice teaching in elementary music in Marshall, he went to work for Larson Gravel. He became a part owner of Larson Gravel and also worked as a groundskeeper at Lac qui Parle Valley High School before having to retire due to health limitations. He was a lifelong member of Big Bend Lutheran Church, where his many activities included directing the church choir. He was a long-time member of the Milan Community Band as the band starter, was a member of the Milan Lions, Big Bend Softball team, Milan American Legion and was involved in the Relay for Life. He enjoyed music and singing, playing softball and golf, cleaning his car, cooking, making pizzelles, and especially using his Kubota. He also enjoyed vacationing in Jamaica with the July folks. He is survived by his wife, Rita: children: son, Kirk and his girlfriend Sarah Peckels, and his son, McKennan of Maple Lake, MN; son, Nathan and his wife Amanda and their son Cylas of Elko New Market, MN; son, Blair of Alexandria, MN and daughter, Emily Bendel and her husband Jason and children Nolan and Beau of Hagen, MN; two sisters: Teryl (and David) Ahlquist of Spicer, MN, and Jean (Gary) Anderson of Fargo, ND; as well as by a number of nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents.
