Archie Wallace, of Montevideo, died on Thursday, March 2, 2006 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis at the age of 87.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at 1:30 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Montevideo with Rev. Paul Woolverton officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening, with the family present from 6 - 7 :30 PM and with a prayer service at 6:00 PM, all at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.
Archie Wallace was born on September 25, 1918 to Guy and Margaret (Warren) Wallace in Granite Falls Township near Asbury, MN He attended schools in Maynard until the family moved to a farm NW of Montevideo. He served in the US Army during WW II from 1942 - 1946. On August 20, 1943, he was united in marriage to Alice Thorsen in Montevideo while on furlough. After his discharge he started a trucking business. He operated a Mobil oil distributorship for a number of years where he sold and delivered fuel oil and later owned a Mobil Gas Station on Highway 7 in Montevideo before retiring. Following his retirement he drove the veterans bus on a part-time basis. Following the death of Alice in 1987, he was united in marriage to ValJean Schei on October 9, 1988 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Montevideo. He was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Montevideo and was active on the finance committee and the building committee. He served on the Board of Directors of Brookside Manor for 27 years and was also a long-time member of American Legion Post #359 in Montevideo. The past few years he has resided at Brookside Manor, where he enjoyed visiting with people and recreational activities. Archie loved to travel, play pool, fish, hunt and his favorite pastime was watching baseball. He loved to tell stories, had a great sense of humor.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan Quernemoen and her husband Charles of Brooklyn Park, MN; a son, Neal Wallace of Hastings, MN; a grandson, Jared Quernemoen; step-children: Barbara Smith and her husband Larry of Montevideo, Mary Hammer and her husband Merle of Granite Falls, and Sue Dyshaw and her husband Brad of Montevideo; 13 step grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; a sister, Joyce Anderson of Montevideo; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Alice in 1987 and ValJean in 2003; two brothers: Roger and Warren Wallace; and two sisters: Edith Blakesley and Eleanor Tostenson.
