Avis Viola (Steffenson) Hendrickson

Avis Hendrickson, of Montevideo, died on Friday, December 1, 2006 at the Chippewa County - Montevideo Hospital at the age of 83.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at 1:30 PM at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Donald McKee officiating.  Interment will be at Terrace Lawn Memory Gardens.  Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening with the family present from 5:30 - 7 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.

Avis Viola (Steffenson) Hendrickson was born on October 30, 1923 in Lac qui Parle Village in Lac qui Parle County, MN to Sophus and Anna (Haugen) Steffenson.  She grew up in rural Lac qui Parle County, where she was confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Baxter and attended rural schools.  She attended Milan Public Schools and graduated from Milan High School in 1941.  She took teacher training at Windom College in Montevideo and taught rural schools in Lac qui Parle County for several years.  On January 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Sheldon Hendrickson in Boyd, MN.  They lived in the Milan area where she worked in the Milan Schools.  They moved to Montevideo in 1968, where she worked at Innovex for many years.  She has been a resident of the Luther Haven Nursing Home for the past 5 months.  She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and enjoyed reading newspapers, doing crossword puzzles, playing trivia games, watching birds and  playing the accordion and piano.  She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by six children: Sharon Cramlet and Ronald of Atwater, MN, Ardis Johnson and Bob of Wayzata, MN, Rodney Hendrickson and Jo of Quitman, TX, Ellen Hendrickson-Peterson and Todd of West Chester, PA, Catherine Strand and Steve of Montevideo, MN, and Mark Hendrickson and Rommell of Elk River, MN; thirteen grandchildren: Leah Peterka, Lynnae Shoultz, Laura Colon, Eric Cramlet, Jennifer McAtee, Shawna Johnson, Tim and TaBrae Hendrickson, Stephanie, Hayley and Caitlin Strand, and Matthew and Michelle Hendrickson; thirteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Sylvia Anderson and Clifford of Montevideo; in-laws: Gloria Hendrickson, Alton and Helen Hendrickson, Delores and Bob Roggatz, Edith Hendrickson, and Roger and Mary Ann Hendrickson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by  her husband, Sheldon in 1987;  by a great-grandson, Daine Shoultz and in-laws, Helen Johnson, James Hendrickson and Lloyd Hendrickson.
