Barbara Hanson (Casey), of Maplewood and formerly of Montevideo, was reunited with her God on October 6, 2011 at The Seasons At Maplewood. She was 69. Memorial Services will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Montevideo with Fr. Jim Devorak and Fr. Pat Casey as the celebrants. Burial will be at the church cemetery. A visitation with family will be held, starting at 5:00 PM, on Monday, October 10, with a prayer vigil at 7:30 PM, at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Montevideo, MN. She was born Barbara Ann Boyd on August 2, 1942, to Leo and Shirley Boyd. She spent her childhood in Winsted, CT, and Pittsburgh, PA. At the age of 19, Barb married John "Jack" Casey. Together, they had five children. During their marriage, they lived in Winsted, CT, South Bend, IN, and Montevideo, MN, where all of their children graduated from high school. Barb was known for her compassion for others, often taking in people who needed a place to call home. This compassion carried over to her work as the secretary at St. Joseph's church, where she worked for nearly 25 years. Everyone who knew her remembers her generosity -- she gave willingly of her time, money, and talents to the church and people in need. As her children moved away from home and embarked on their careers, Barb met and fell in love with Denny Hanson. Barb and Denny spent many happy years together traveling and entertaining, making good friends everywhere they went. Even after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, they shared moments of joy between them and with those around them. She is survived by her five children: Jackie Casey, Bill and Kathleen Casey, Sean Casey, Meghan Casey, and Erin Casey; her husband, Denny Hanson; her stepchildren: Paul Hanson, Mike and Kim Hanson, and Terri Berntson; her grandchildren: Jacob and Lizzie Casey, Bri, Aly, and Grace Hanson, Chris Bauman, and Katie Berntson; and many relatives and countless friends. Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Leo Boyd and Shirley Lindgren; her stepparents, Margaret Boyd and Ken Lindgren; her brother, Dennis Boyd; and stepdaughter, Jennifer Hanson. She is also preceded in death by beloved family members and dear friends. Barb's vibrant life was cut short by Alzheimer's Disease. Denny and her friends have been supporting the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) in the hopes that a cure will be found. Up until she moved to the memory care facility, Barb was an active leader in Kids Against Hunger (www.kidsagainsthunger.org), helping to provide food to needy families in her community and around the world. To celebrate Barb's generosity in life, her family requests memorials be made to these two organizations in lieu of flowers.
