Bernice Palma Prestholdt was born on August 3, 1919, in Hantho Township, the daughter of Ole and Emilie (Fossen) Skurdahl. She was baptized in 1919 and was confirmed in 1932 at Borgund Lutheran Church in rural Madison. She attended country school in District 29 in Hantho Township through the eighth grade and graduated from Appleton High School in 1937. She furthered her education for one year at Madison Normal School, then taught in country school for one year. Bernice and Rudy Prestholdt were married on July 20, 1943, at the Borgund Parsonage in Madison. Three sons were born to this union: Robert, Charles and James. They lived in Cerro Gordo Township before moving into Dawson. Over the years, they enjoyed vacations made with other couples. Bernice also had many hobbies. When she was younger, she enjoyed playing guitar, singing, and fastpitch softball, where she played third base. Sports were a very big part of Bernice's life; she enjoyed watching her sons and grandchildren participate in athletics. She was an avid Blackjacks, Cerro Gordo fastpitch, and Twins fan. Bernice also loved animals, playing cards, especially Rook (which she taught all her grandkids to play), quilting, and coffee time with friends and family. Three words that describe what was most important to Bernice were family, friends, and faith. Her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the most important parts of her life. She supported and encouraged them in all they did. She loved to visit and share laughs with her beloved family. And when it was time for a visit to end, she alway gave a hug, said, "I love you," and blew a kiss. Friends were also important to Bernice. She was a loyal friend and always remembered others with a letter, visit, or phone call. Bernice's faith was what defined her; she lived her life for the Lord. She was a faithful servant, reading the Bible daily and attending church regularly. She was actively involved at Borgund Lutheran Church. Bernice's strong faith helped her through difficulties and losses she endured. Her faith was unwavering, even when she neared the end of her own life. After her health started to fail, she moved into the Johnson Memorial Care Center, where she died on Saturday afternoon of October 22, surrounded by her family, at the age of 92. She is survived by two sons: Charles (Janice) Prestholdt and James (Kristi) Prestholdt, both of Dawson; daughter-in-law, Karen (Clayton) Houff of Madison; sister-in-law, Olga Prestholdt of Dawson; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren: Kris (Paul) Prestholdt-Johnshoy and their daughter, Kaitlin; Brian (Shelly) Prestholdt and their children: Braden, Garett, Brielle and Allie; Robb Prestholdt; Sadie (Dean) Solem and their sons, Kade and Mason; Brita (Matt) Stange and their children, Jaxon and Kennedy; Darin (Leah) Prestholdt; Dane Prestholdt; Megan Prestholdt; Jenna (Jimmy) Williamson and their daughter, Alexis; and Marisa Prestholdt; other family and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Rudy on February 7, 2006; son, Robert on February 5, 1994; siblings: Magnus Skurdahl, Peter Skurdahl and Mabel Vaala; and niece, Emily Vaala. Bernice was a wonderful lady who touched many people's lives. She believed in seeing the good in everyone and never had an unkind word to say. She loved her family, her friends and her Lord. She will be greatly missed.
