Betty June Maxwell

January 8, 1937 — July 17, 2008

Betty June Maxwell, of Montevideo, died on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Chippewa County - Montevideo Hospital at the age of 71. Memorial services will be conducted on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Montevideo with Rev. Gwen Bohlke officiating. Interment will be at Americus, KS. Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening with the family present from 5-7 P.M. and a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Montevideo. Betty June (Alley) Maxwell was born January 8, 1937 in Alpena, SD the daughter of Floyd and Winifred (Jeffers) Alley. She moved with her family to Huron, SD, Nampa, ID, and then to McAllen, TX where she graduated from high school in 1954. Betty June graduated from Texas Woman's University in Denton, TX in 1958 and then moved to Wichita, KS to teach school. She was united in marriage with Calvin Maxwell August 1, 1959 at First Methodist Church in Wichita, KS. They moved to Azusa, CA where she was the librarian for Aerojet, then to Omaha, NE in 1963, and to Grand Island, NE in 1965. They moved to Montevideo in 1971. She taught parent education for Community Ed and was also a Migrant Program Teacher. Betty June was active at Calvary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, was the Christian Ed Coordinator, and enjoyed Bible Study and in later years was active at the United Methodist Church especially the prayer chain and turkey suppers. She was a member of AAUW and the Garden Club and she enjoyed gardening, baking, and drying flowers. Above all, Betty June was a devoted mother and wife. She is survived by her husband, Cal; three children: Larus (and Miriam) Maxwell of Raleigh, NC, Robin (and Bob) Schrag of Herndon, VA, and Ann (and John) Hallam of Austin, TX; seven grandchildren: Aaron and Alyssa Maxwell, Will and Victoria Schrag, and Benjamin, Samuel and Kathryn Hallam; one brother, Lowell (and Joan) Alley of Franklin, WI; one sister, Joyce Cook of Wichita, KS; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents and one sister, Maxine Skow.
