Funeral service was at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at the Providence Valley Lutheran Church with Pastor Cheryl Matthews officiating; Dean Pearson sang "On Eagle's Wings" and "How Great Thou Art" and organist, Arlys Swenson accompanied the singing of "Onward Christian Soldiers" and "Children of the Heavenly Father." Duane Anderson, Todd Buer, Galen Hegg, David Larson, Elmer Pehrson, Jim Pehrson, Bob Pehrson, Leonard Swenson and Maynard Swenson were honorary and active casketbearers were Ryan Anderson, Kevin Hendrickson, Paul Schmitz, Justin Zinter, Lorin Zinter and Shane Zinter. Burial was in the church cemetery. Carl William Zinter was born May 19, 1917, to Herman and Ida (Gaedke) Zinter at their home in Moylan Township, Marshall County, rural Goodridge, MN. He was baptized on June 13, 1917, and confirmed on November 18, 1934, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Grygla, MN. He completed his education in country school and helped his father on the family farm until he entered the US Army on March 19, 1941, at Fort Snelling, MN. He was honorably discharged on October 20, 1945, at Camp McCoy, WI, after serving in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He currently was a member of the Clark-Hansen VFW Post in Canby. Carl and Opal McKenney were united in marriage on October 27, 1945, in Madison, MN. They lived for one winter in South Dakota before moving to Goodridge. In 1946, they moved to a farm in rural Canby, where they farmed until retirement around 1980, when they built a new home on a farm 2 miles north. Carl was on the School Board of District 24, held township and county offices with Farm Bureau, and was active in the local Republican Party. He served on the Providence Valley Church Council and for several years, was their custodian. He kept busy with carpenter and repair work for the church and for many friends and shingled and sided their home when he was well into his 80's. He also liked trapping pocket gophers and working in his big vegetable garden, especially raising large watermelons. He loved work, his church and his family. Carl died on Friday, January 2, 2009, at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dawson at the age of 91 years, 7 months and 9 days. He is survived by his wife, Opal; 3 sons: Dennis (Donna) Zinter of Dawson, Craig (Marcia) Zinter of Chaska and Gene (Bobbie) Zinter of rural Canby; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Clarence Peters of Goodridge, MN; other family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: Otto, Henry and Herbert Zinter; and sisters: Louise Seaver and Ruth Peters.
