Carnie Breberg

Carnie Breberg passed away peacefully the morning of Saturday, November 25, 2023 at the Johnson Memorial Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 1, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Providence Valley Lutheran Church in rural Dawson.  Pastor Kendall Stelter will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held Thursday, November 30, 2023 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson with a prayer service beginning at 6:30 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Carnella Louise Anderson was born October 18, 1938 to Lavern and Louise (Hillman) Anderson at home near Haydenville, MN. She grew up north of Marietta.  She was baptized and confirmed at Augusta Lutheran Church and attended Marietta Schools, graduating with the Class of 1957.

On May 24, 1957, Carnie married her high school sweetheart Maurice Kallhoff. This union took them to Fort Bragg Air Force Base, Hope Mills, North Carolina following the birth of their son Bruce on September 25, 1957.  On October 21,1958 she gave birth to a stillborn son Bryce. On October 26, 1959 daughter Karie was born.  While stationed here, they enjoyed trips to Florida, making friends from across the country, Christmas’s without much snow and the year round rose bushes until moving back to Dawson in 1961.   In her own words “On Nov 3, 1969 on a nice clear day, tragically, Maurice was killed in a truck accident on HWY 212. East of Dawson. On Dec. 31 1970, I went to a New Years Eve party at the VFW with Sorbys and Skordahls.  I met Paul Breberg”.  On July 17, 1971, Carnie married Paul Breberg at Providence Valley Lutheran Church. To this union a daughter Melanie was born on September 29, 1972.

Carnie enjoyed the outdoors through flower gardens, canning, fishing and camping. In the 1970’s and early 1980’s traveling across the northern US and Canada in the family motorhome with memories that filled many photo albums. After selling the motorhome, these travels turned into Rustad tours across the United States and Canada.  Over 45 years of summer weekends were spent at Old Wagon campground near Hawick MN, enjoying friends, family and happy hour.  Grandkids knew they could always count on Grandma Carnie to fund their trips to the campground store. Whether at home or at the lake, Carnie enjoyed the birds of MN, kept their feeders full and listening to the lake loons.

Carnie was an active member of Providence Valley Lutheran Church.  She was a member of the church choir, Sunday School teacher, Ladies Aid President, church council, and an official Church Basement Lady.  You can almost hear the giggles coming from the kitchen along with the toot toot of the Providence Railroad going by (right Arlys?).

Carnie was proud to be a farmer's wife.  Every day she somehow made a “Sunday Dinner” or meals on wheels when field work was being done for the crew. She was always the ultimate hostess. Being a great cook made the numerous friend and family parties flow, filling the house with music, laughter, and smells of her delicious cooking.

She loved being with family, her girlfriends and the Providence gang, the “surprising” casino trips, card games, singing, some shenanigans and plain old fun of passing around “precious gifts” made her smile years later when she would tell these stories.

Carnie was always active with the youth, being a Boy Scout, Girl Scout and 4H leader, along with being her kids biggest cheerleader of whatever they were involved in.

As an avid crafter she crocheted, sewed, and did embroidery, welcoming babies with special handmade items so they knew how loved they were passing this trait on to Karie. She was an expert spoiler of both grandkids and great grandkids, always having favorite foods on hand and maybe (certainly) having a few dollars ready for them as they would head down the road.

She was always available for caretaking of nieces and nephews, neighbor kids and those who might have just needed an Oreo or two.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lavern and Louise Anderson, husband Maurice infant son Bryce, parents-in-law; Paul and Katherine Kallhoff and Fremont and Ruth Breberg, best friends Sharon Johnson and Bonnie Pearson and many other loved ones.

Carnie is survived by husband of 52 years Paul Breberg, children; Bruce (Mary) Kallhoff of Arlington MN, Karie (Gary) Sorknes of Marietta, MN, Melanie (Mike) Wentlandt of Spring Valley, WI. Brother, Arg and Kathy Anderson, and sister, Carolye and Lee Foshaug. Grandchildren: Brad (Rebecca) Kallhoff of St. Paul MN, Eric (fiancé Emily) Kallhoff of Mankato, MN, and Megan Wentlandt of Spring Valley, WI. Great Grandsons: Levi and Benjamin Kallhoff of St. Paul, MN. In Laws: the brothers and sisters of Maurice, Irene Breberg, Phyllis and Ray Hostager, Bill Keefe, Ron and Nancy Breberg. Gratefully she had too many nieces, nephews, and cousins to count along with their families and the long list of so many lifelong friends.
