Cathleen Heggestad, of Montevideo, passed away Monday, October 10, 2022 at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 80.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, October 24, 2022 at Watson Lutheran Church with Rev. Marie Eckberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 11:30am - 1:00 pm on Monday at the church.
Cathleen Diane (Campbell) was born on May 5, 1942 to Leslie and Lillian (Frith) Campbell in Montevideo, MN. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was confirmed there in 1956. Cathy grew up in Montevideo and graduated from Central High School, class of 1960.
Cathy attended Mankato State University for a year, then worked at Homestead Nursing Home and various other businesses in the Minneapolis area. She moved to Denver, CO in 1962 where she was the bookkeeper at Tower Drug. Upon returning to Montevideo, Cathy worked as a cashier at Cook’s Grocery and for many years as a bookkeeper for her father at Campbell Implement, along with waitressing for a time at Deb’s Supper Club. In 1973 Cathy met and married Wallace Heggestad of Watson, MN. Cathy & Wally operated the Watson Café and Lounge for several years and Watson Grocery & Locker until 2000. Cathy was the main care giver for her grandparents as they aged and during the early 1980’s she worked at Luther Haven Nursing Home.
Cathy was active in Ladies Aid at church, Birthday Club with her Watson friends, and co-made many banners & special projects for Watson Lutheran Church. She was also quite active with the Chippewa County Historical Society and served on Montevideo Parks board, as well as being a member of the American Legion Axillary. Cathy spent many hours writing and organizing genealogy for the Heggestad and Gunderson sides of the family. She also wrote a column in the Milan Standard-Watson Journal newspaper for several years. Cathy cherished her friends from her school years and looked forward to their Annual Girls Weekend on Lake Minnewaska. In later years, she volunteered at Second Time Around in downtown Montevideo.
Cathy is survived by her daughter, Kristie (Jason) Eid of Fargo and Wally’s son, Steven (Julie) Heggestad of Montevideo; five grandchildren: Emily Onstad, Paige Eid, Thomas Eid, Shana Anspach, Bryon Heggestad; three great grandchildren; brother, Paul Campbell of Montevideo; sister-in-law, Donna Campbell of Princeton, MN; brother-in-law, Richard (and Janice) Heggestad of Montevideo; sister-in-law, Beverly (Laurel) Witte of S. St. Paul, MN; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her cherished friends and Honorary Pallbearers: Kathy (Schaller) Beito, Diane (Dilley) Sheldon, Jane (Arnold) Johnson, Connie (Hildebrand) Berman, Joann (Armstrong) Lewis, Jill (Harding) Lueken.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Wallace Heggestad; her parents, Leslie & Lillian Campbell; two brothers, Lee Campbell and Ronald Campbell; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
