Charles Roger Skordahl, known to most as “Doc,” was born on December 26, 1933, in Madison, MN, to Elmer and Myrtle (Bordson) Skordahl. He grew up in Louisburg, MN, and was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. Doc graduated from Appleton High School in 1952. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country before returning home to build a life rooted in hard work, community, and love.
On July 18, 1959, Doc married the love of his life, Sharon Darlene Tongen, at Kviteseid Lutheran Church in Milan, MN. For 65 years, they shared a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. They made their home in Dawson, where Doc worked for Dawson Mills/AGP for 37 years. Even after retiring, he couldn’t sit still—he kept busy at the car dealerships and later became a beloved school bus driver to hundreds of kids over the years.
Doc was a proud veteran and a dedicated member of the American Legion, VFW, and Lions Club, where he poured his energy into serving his community. But perhaps he was best known for never meeting a stranger—his life was a sermon of kindness, generosity, and good humor. Whether he was taking his daily rides around town in his golf cart, playing cards, snowmobiling, or sitting down for coffee and conversation, he thrived in the company of others. He was the kind of man who would quietly pull the waitress aside to say, “Put it all on my tab,” and the kind who never hesitated to lend a hand, always ready to give you the shirt off his back.
His family was his greatest pride. From trips to the lake, camping out in the living room, and starting a lawn care business together, to selling sweet corn, going to the auto show, and gifting the first set of golf clubs—he was always there, cheering them on. He had a playful side, rewarding every “A” on a report card with two bucks and a chuckle about how he never got one himself—“They never got that high,” he’d say. And he had a knack for making every moment memorable, like the time he got pulled over while singing Tall Tall Trees because the cops thought his swerving meant he was drunk.
Doc is survived by his wife, Sharon; children, Terry Skordahl of Minnetonka and Tammy (Jon) Wager of Dawson; grandchildren, Justin (Carly) Wager and their children, Emery, Asher, and Ames, Jordan (Bethany) Wager and their children, Logan, Layton, William, Callum, and Malea, Jacob (Whitney) Wager and their children, Ezra, Iver, and Asa, Jarrett (Danielle) Wager and their children, Peyton, Lennon, and Maddyn, Joshua Wager and fiancee Sava Gidey; sister, Marlys Radermacher; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A true original, Doc lived life on the edge, and his presence will be deeply missed. There will always be a spot saved for him at Erickson's garage and Detoys, where his stories and laughter will live on. While he always told us how proud he was of us, the truth is—we were even prouder to call him ours.
