Clarence Theodore Ostlie was born on September 5, 1923 on the family farm in Rosewood Township in rural Montevideo, Chippewa County, Minnesota to Albert Theodore and Cora (Lund) Ostlie. He was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tunsberg Township and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1942. His diverse interests included vegetable gardening, Indian artifact and rock hunting, sports, nature, music, and adoring his grand- and great grandchildren. He participated in church choirs and the Montevideo Community Band, and was a member of the Sons of Norway, Indian History Hunters, and Chippewa County Historical Society. In his earlier years, he was a softball pitcher with the Montevideo Implement, Cerro Gordo, and other local fastpitch softball teams; his opponents often remarked how he could make the softball dance.
