Clyde Phillips, of Montevideo, died on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Chippewa County - Montevideo Hospital at the age of 93. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Jevnaker Lutheran Church of rural Montevideo with Rev. Marie Eckberg officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon and evening, with the family present from 5 - 7 PM and with a prayer service at 5:00 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Clyde William Phillips was born on June 10, 1917 in Lyons, NE to Clinton and Susan (Kiefer) Phillips. He moved to Granite Falls, MN as a child. Clyde's formal education ended in the 9th grade when moving to rural Montevideo meant paying for textbooks. Clyde worked on his family's farm and later hired out to others. On January 10, 1940, Clyde traveled by train to Effie, MN to spend several frigid months in a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp, earning $1 per day. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 28, 1940. Trained as a tank crewman, he was attached to the 751st tank battalion and served on the front lines in Italy and North Africa. He was decorated with the African Middle Eastern Ribbon and Battle Stars for the Italian and Tunisian Campaigns. On September 12, 1944, he married his devoted sweetheart, Hazel Skogrand, at the Big Bend Lutheran Parsonage. They lived and farmed five miles north of Montevideo for a few years before moving to Mandt Township, where they raised crops, fed beef cattle and raised three daughters. Clyde and Hazel enjoyed twenty-two years at the Fun N Sun RV Park in San Benito, TX, nurturing old friendships and making new friends. Upon retiring, Clyde began what would become a lifelong hobby - collecting and restoring antique tractors. As Hazel's health declined, they moved to Brookside Manor in Montevideo in 2005. Clyde enjoyed the activities and companionship of the Brookside "family" until moving to Luther Haven in April of this year. Clyde was a long time member of Jevnaker Lutheran Church and was a lifelong member of VFW Post #380 and Disabled American Veterans. He was a thirty year member and past president of the Minnesota Valley Antique Farm Power and Machinery Association. Clyde gave generously of his time and talent, serving on the township board for many years. Clyde and Hazel were presented with a Golden Pass when Clyde retired after twenty years on the Chippewa Co. Fair Board. They also were faithful volunteers at the VA Clinic in Montevideo. He was an involved parent and enthusiastic leader in the Mandt Livewires 4-H club, helping his daughters show cattle at the county and state competitions and mentoring other youth in the community. Favorite pastimes for Clyde included traveling, playing buck euchre, shooting pool, watching Professional Bull Riding, but most of all, spending time with family and friends. He is survived by three daughters: Susan Swanson and her husband Doug of West Des Moines, IA, Sally Phillips Helling and her husband Jim Helling of Plymouth, MN and Jane Laub of Minnetonka, MN; three grandchildren: Jason Swanson and his wife Sue, Stephanie Downing and her husband Kelby and Stacy Lindholm; three great-grandchildren: Benjamin and Jacob Swanson and Anna Lindholm; a brother, Paul Phillips and his wife Lois of Montevideo; as well as by a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazel in 2005 and three sisters: Edith Phillips, Gladys Halverson and Lucille Steinbach. Clyde will be remembered as a kind and gentle man, a good farmer, loyal friend and loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, brother and uncle. Blessed was Clyde's life, blessed be his memory.
