Dale Sunderland, of Montevideo, died on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at the Granite Falls Care Center at the age of 88.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 19, 2018 at 11:00AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City, MN. Rev. Joel Guenningsman will officiate and interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Montevideo.
Visitation with the family will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2018 from 5PM to 7PM at the Anderson-TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo and will continue one hour prior to services on Monday.
Dale Russell Sunderland was born on October 24, 1929 in Montevideo to Harry and Elsie (Mills) Sunderland. The family moved to the farm when Dale was four years old. He was baptized and confirmed at Rosewood Methodist Church. Dale attended country school at Mills School district 316 then went on to study agriculture in Morris, MN. He returned home to Havelock Township to follow in his father’s footsteps and farm the land.
On September 2, 1951, Dale was united in marriage with Katherine Schmaedeka at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. To this union, 4 sons and 2 daughters were born. Dale was a lifelong farmer. He always had livestock and raising hogs made him most happy. He also enjoyed restoring antique tractors. Dale was active on the Township Board, Cenex Board, Church council, and was a member of Heritage Hill. He considered his farming to be his hobby and his hobby was his passion, that passion for farming was passed down to his sons which Dale was very proud of. Dale also enjoyed spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren teaching them things about the farm, and taking them for rides on his 4-wheeler. He would never miss the opportunity to spend time with his family.
Dale is survived by his children: Steve (Lynell) Sunderland of Montevideo, Brad (Mary) Sunderland of Maynard, Russell (Cheryl) Sunderland of Jamestown, ND, LuAnn (Lonnie) Hansen of Maynard, Kent (fiancé, Robin Anderson) of Montevideo, and LaNae (John Bendickson) Sunderland of Pennock, MN; nine grandchildren: Brady (Meghan) Sunderland, Toby (Jaclyn) Sunderland, Jodi (Mike) Fischer, Chad (Chontelle) Hansen, Jessica (David) Motzko, Megan (Kyle) Kampa, Kathleen Bendickson, Grace Bendickson, and Ian Bendickson; 13 great-grandchildren: Braxton, Addilyn, Corbin, and Ethan Sunderland, Ericka, Katryna, Brody, Kevin, and Declan Hansen, Mackenzie, Madison, and Mya Motzko, and Elsie Kampa; siblings: Kenny Sunderland, Ardis Maus, Janice Caspers, and June Kurtzbein; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Katherine in 1993; two sisters, Thelma and Jean; and a daughter-in-law, Imo Sunderland.
