Dennis Cushman

Dennis Cushman of Montevideo died on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Alexandria Assisted Living the age of 79.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Montevideo.  Visitation with the family will be held from 10-11 AM on the day of the service.

Dennis Lane Cushman was born March 7, 1939 in Montevideo to Ralph and Mabel (Allen) Cushman.  He was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Montevideo.  He grew up in the Montevideo area and graduated from Montevideo High School.  Following high school Dennis worked as a machinist for National Bushing.  He was united in marriage to Joan Gjerset on July 24, 1959 at Watson Lutheran Church.  They raised three children: Rick, Tim and Lori.  Dennis would become a route driver for UPS and would work there for over 28 years. In the last few years Dennis lived at Brookside Senior Living  in Montevideo, spent 6 weeks at his cabin on Eagle Lake this past summer and eventually moved to Alexandria.

In early years Dennis was a member of the Montevideo Rescue Squad.  In the summer he was the first one outside in the morning. He took great pride in his yard and was often seen watering the grass, enjoying the day. One of his biggest projects was to build the lake cabin where the family would spend many weekends together.  He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.  His greatest love was spending time with family, especially  grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Family will remember Dennis’ wonderful sense of humor, his love for his wife, his strong faith, his love for the lake, his smile and his twinkling blue eyes.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Joan; children: Lori Knutson, Battle Lake, MN and Tim (Kathy) Cushman, Tea, SD; grandchildren: Kari (DJ Kirking) Huntley, Steve (Ali) Huntley, Kristi (Sean) Melmer, Kayla (Ryan) Boike, Alicia (Colin) Hofer, Andrea Cushman and Benjamin (Alexis) Cushman; great-grandchildren: Jaden, Madden, Kingston, Brooks, Cole and Alayna; brother, Byron (Melinda) Cushman, Chippewa Falls, WI; nieces and nephews: Mark, Brian, Holli, Diane, Brenda, Nancy, Mike and Steve; as well as other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Ralph and Mabel; son, Rick Cushman; brothers: Allen Cushman and Leland Cushman; sister, Lois Madden-Reiman; brother-in-law, Jerome Madden; and nephew, Scott Madden.
