Doris Plate, age 93, of Dawson, MN went to be with the Lord, on Friday, February 3, 2017 in Gilbert, AZ, surrounded by her family.
A memorial and visitation service will be held Friday, July 7 from 4-6 PM at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson with a burial to follow in Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Dawson.
Doris Marie (Kostad) Plate was born on June 5, 1923 in Freeland Township of Lac Qui Parle County, Minnesota, to Henry and Cora (Hoium) Kostad. She attended Garfield Lutheran Church, where Doris was baptized in 1923 and confirmed in 1937. Doris attended country school and continued her schooling at Madison High School, where she graduated in 1942. Following her graduation, she journeyed to Detroit, MI and worked on a manufacturing assembly line for a year.
On January 5, 1947 she was united in marriage to Edwin Plate at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dawson. They started their life together in rural Dawson on the Plate Family Farm. Doris enjoyed being a farm wife and mother to 5 children. She stayed busy with the many responsibilities of raising a family and life on the farm. She was also involved with women’s groups at both at Trinity and Grace Lutheran Churches and was a member of the Eastern Star organization in Dawson.
Doris and family enjoyed many years at Point Welcome, located north of Ortonville on Big Stone Lake. It was the highlight of Doris’ summers because she enjoyed fishing, lake life, family time, and pontoon rides at the lake.
Doris showed her affection for others with her cooking and baking. Some her specialties were fresh fish frys, her famous scalloped potatoes and meatballs, banana bread, frog eye salad, glorified rice, vegetable beef soup, rhubarb and apple sauces, her cookies and many more.
Doris loved playing Farkle (AKA-Sparkle), Dominos, and card games. She also always had a game show on the TV, ranging from Wheel of Fortune to Family Feud. She always had a crochet hook within reach. Crocheting was a huge part of Doris’s life as she started as a child. In the last 6 years, she accomplished over 90 afghans that were shared with family and friends.
She always looked forward to spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as Billy’s annual visits and tree trimming. Above all, Doris lived independently through the age of 93.
Doris is survived by her children: Sharon (Orren) Volk of Mesa, AZ, Bonnie Beckwith of North Richland, TX, Mark (Cheryl) Plate of Redmond, WA, Carol Bransfield of Centennial, CO and a daughter-in–law, Laurie Plate of Burnsville, MN; ten grandchildren: Scott (RoseAnn) Volk, Ryan Beckwith, Shannon Beckwith, Christopher (Laurie) Plate, Crystal (Nick) Plate, Stephanie (Jason) Kelly, Alyssa Plate, Angela (Victor) Varakitsomboon, Matthew Bransfield, and Kevin Bransfield; great grandchildren: Brooklyn and Xavier Dahl, Brayden, Jack, Jace, Ace and Axel Larson; as well as other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Cora Kostad; her husband, Edwin in 1996; a son, Ronald in 1999; a brother and wife, Kenneth (Iola) Kostad, a sister and husband, Phyllis (Al) Westby, a sister-in-law, Leone Kostad and sons-in-laws, Dr. Craig Beckwith and Charles Bransfield Jr. She was followed in death by her brother, Stanley Kostad on April 18th 2017.
Doris will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
