Dorothy (Brown) Carlson

December 7, 1931 — August 14, 2016

Dorothy Carlson died Sunday, August 14, 2016 at her home in Dawson, MN at the age of 84.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 10:30 AM at First Presbyterian Church in Dawson.  Rev. Herb Rotunda will officiate and interment will be in the Dawson Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 16 from 5-7:00 PM at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.

Dorothy Helen (Brown) Carlson, born December 7,1931 at her parents farm in Red Iron Township in Marshall County, South Dakota to Fred and Helen (Munzenreider) Brown.  Dorothy grew up and attended country school through the 8th grade.  Dorothy then moved to Sisseton to continue her education, graduating from Sisseton High School.  Dorothy married Jerome Hannasch.  This marriage ended amicably and Dorothy met James Carlson and the two of them were united in marriage on June 15th, 1961.  James and Dorothy made their home in Dawson, and Dorothy, was soon found working at the Dawson Nursing Home.  Never one to pass up a viable opportunity she also worked at several different businesses in Dawson during her lifetime here.  Gamble Hardware, Davidson’s Red Owl, Dawson Mills and then on to State Farm Insurance and retired early in 2000.  Finding a lot of time on her hands Dorothy then got busy working at Facing New Horizons.

Dorothy gave back to her community by serving on the Countryside Public Health Board, canvassed for Census a few times and she also volunteered at the JMHS Thrift Shop.  Dorothy was a life time member of the VFW Auxiliary, she helped with boy and girl scout activities and Sunday school classes.  Dorothy loved to do jigsaw puzzles, embroidery and tending her flower gardens when she wasn’t busy tending her kids, helping them with their homes and families or loving her pets.

Dorothy is survived by her husband of 55 years, James Carlson; children: Connie (Jim) Hoffman of Canby, Keith (Nancy) Hannasch of Becker, MN,  Marilyn Hannasch of Dawson, Glenn (Kimberly) Carlson of Dawson and Robert Carlson of Brookings, SD.  Dorothy was blessed with 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Dorothy is also survived by one brother, Calvin (Nyra) Brown of Watertown, SD; sister-in-law Darlene (Orville) Brown of Sisseton, SD, brother-in-law, Roger Thompson of Salt Lake City, UT; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers: Orin, Ervin and Orville; two sisters: Delcy and Marilyn; three sisters-in-law: Barbara, Myrtle, and Marlene.
