Dorothy H. Westby

December 19, 1913 — April 25, 2011

Dorothy Westby, of Mars, Pennsylvania, formerly of Dawson, died Monday afternoon, April 25, 2011, at Sunrise of Cranbery Senior Living in Mars, PA, at the age of 97. Funeral was at 11AM, Saturday, April 30, 2011, at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home with Pastor Kendall Stelter officiating using the scriptures Ephesians 2:8-9, Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 and John 14:1-3. Interment was in Grace Lutheran Cemetery with Craig Linton, Don, Herman "Butch" and Scott Ochsendorf serving as casketbearers. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home. Dorothy H. Westby was born on December 19, 1913, on the family farm in rural Canby, MN, to Carl and Mathilda (Lokken) Ochsendorf. She was baptized and later confirmed at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Canby (presently known as Our Saviour's Lutheran Church). She attended school in rural Canby and at Canby High School. When she moved to Dawson, she worked for several years in the Dawson Hospital and, later, helped to manage the Rundquist grocery store. On February 25, 1945, Dorothy married Willard "Bill" Westby of Dawson. They moved to the Westby farm and continued to live and farm there until 1979, when they retired and built a home in Dawson. After Willard died in 1995, she remained in their home until the summer of 2000, when she moved to the Pittsburgh area where her daughter, Nancy, and her husband, Chip live. Dorothy most recently lived at an assisted living facility near Nancy and Chip's home, where she died on Monday, April 25, 2011, at the age of 97. Dorothy and Willard were members of Grace Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. Dorothy enjoyed reading, playing cards, baseball (especially the Minnesota Twins) and traveling to visit her family throughout the years. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Charles) Miller of Gibsonia, PA; granddaughter, Amelia (Craig) Linton of Atlanta, GA; and other family and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Willard on December 12, 1995; and brother, Elmer "Bud" Ochsendorf. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. AN IRISH POEM EXPRESSING DOROTHY'S WISHES TO ALL THAT DOROTHY FREQUENTLY QUOTED: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, And the rains fall soft upon your fields, And, until we meet again May God hold you in the palm of His hand. BRIEF FAREWELL TO THOSE WHO SHE FELT SHE WOULD NEVER SEE AGAIN: May you have a good life. Blessed be her memory.
