Dorothy Mae Boike, of Montevideo, died on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital at the age of 86.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, February 27, 2015 at 1:30 PM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Montevideo.
Visitation will be Thursday afternoon and evening with the family present from 5 – 7 P.M. and with a prayer service at 6:30 P.M. at the Anderson-TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo.
Dorothy Mae (Gottschalk) Boike was born on May 21, 1928 in Pine River, MN to Carl and Augusta (Roske) Gottschalk. She was baptized on June 8, 1928 and confirmed on June 28, 1942 in Boyd, MN. She went to grade school in Boyd and graduated from Maynard High School in 1946. After high school she attended Gale Communications Institute in Minneapolis for their Airlines course. She worked at Quality Park Envelope Company in St. Paul as a billing clerk. Dorothy returned to Montevideo and worked at the Montgomery Ward Catalog Department.
On December 7, 1947 she was united in marriage to Elmer Boike at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Montevideo. In 1948, they started farming in Rosewood Township and in 1954 moved to Mandt Township. She enjoyed farming with Elmer. Dorothy drove tractor, helped with the livestock along with raising 2500 laying hens, she had a large vegetable garden, and loved spending time working in her flower gardens. She was an avid crafter, loved to quilt and sew. She always looked forward to playing cards with friends, and spending time at the lake every summer. She was always busy in the kitchen making meals and lunches for all who helped Elmer on the farm. In 1992, Elmer and Dorothy moved into town. For 14 years they spent their winters in Texas with her sister Ethel and husband Roger Bjorndahl.
Dorothy was a Sunday school teacher for several years at St. Paul Lutheran Church, was active in Ladies Aide at the church, and also served on the church bazaar committee. She was involved with Chippewa County Sunnyside 4-H club when the kids were young. She enjoyed spending time with her best friend Lorna (Macziewski) Cobb. She always looked forward to getting together with family during the holidays.
Dorothy moved to Luther Haven in January 2012. She loved to play cards, bingo and jokereno, and loved having the Ramsey reading buddies come so she could read to them or play games. She helped make crafts for the Luther Haven Bazaar and attended bible study and church with Elmer.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer; children: Rowland (and Barb) Boike of Montevideo, Deborah (and Jeff) Dahl of Montevideo, Mark (and Diane) Boike of Deerwood, MN, Brenda (and Dave) Meyers of Plymouth, MN; eight grandchildren: Dustin Gilbertson, Eric (Stacey) Boike, Nicole (Brad) Knight, Tricia (Cole) Montgomery, Michael (Molly) Boike, Kristopher (Emily) Boike, Zachary and Aaron Meyers, grand daughter-in-law, Sue Gilbertson; step grandchildren Tricia and Matt McPhie and family, Amanda and Jason Plevell and family, Kati and Travis Birhanzl and family; Ten great-grandchildren: Paige, Alex and Sam Gilbertson, Kaden, Carson, Ellie and Drew Boike, Maliha Knight, Dane and Sig Montgomery; step-great grandchildren , Garret (special friend Dani) Rodeberg, Elijah Rodeberg, and Leah (fiance’ Jordan Lehtola) Rodeberg, a sister, Ethel (and Roger) Bjorndahl of Mercedes, TX; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Alfred, Elmer and Eugene Gottschalk; sister, Ruth Golden; grandson Ryan Gilbertson; great- granddaughter Hannah Gilbertson; her parents-in-law, Harm and Hilda Boike; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
