Edna (Belsaas) Anderson

September 13, 1917 — December 26, 2017

Edna Anderson, of Montevideo, died Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System in Watertown, SD at the age of 100.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, January 5, 2017 at Salem Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Rev. Matt Philaya will officiate and interment will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Montevideo.

Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Edna Jeanette (Belsaas) Anderson was born in Boyd, MN on September 13, 1917 to Peter and Jorgina (Rustad) Belsaas.  She attended school in Boyd and graduated in 1936.  Edna attended Normal Training in St. Cloud and taught rural school at Louisburg for 2 years.  On October 20, 1940, Edna was united in marriage to Leonard Anderson at St. Petri Lutheran Church.  They farmed in Sparta Township and raised 4 children together.

In 1956, Edna continued her teaching career in Maynard and Watson until 1960.  She then taught at Sanford Elementary School.  During this time Edna would complete her Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Education, first at Southwest State in Marshall and then at St. Cloud State.  Following her retirement in 1980, she continued substitute teaching in the Montevideo School District.   She loved teaching fourth and fifth grade and especially enjoyed teaching children.

Edna and Leonard would move to Paulson Park in Montevideo in 1996.  They enjoyed retirement together and travelling to see their children.  Leonard passed away in 2002.  Edna enjoyed being a member of the circle and also quilting at Salem Lutheran Church.   She moved to Copper Glen in 2011 and then to Luther Haven Nursing home in 2017.

Edna is survived by her children: Ron Anderson and his wife Sue Ann of Union, MI, Doug Anderson and his wife Nancy of Minnetonka, MN, Laurie Anderson and partner Cathie Goodman of Bonita Springs, FL, and Sandy Davis and her husband Dan of Ft. Collins, CO; 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard June 9, 2002; 5 brothers: Alfred, Ingvald, Palmer, Leonard, and  Richard; and 7 sisters: Christine Brandell, Helen Belsaas, Agnes Mitlyng, Dorothy Foote, Margaret Chamberlain, Myrtle Fremo and Anna Bergland.
