Edna Hakel, of Montevideo, died on Sunday, June 6, 2004 at the Annandale Care Center in Annandale, MN at the age of 93.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at 1:30 PM at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Kurt Hoover officiating. Interment will be in the Sunset memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon and evening, with the family from 6 - 7:30 PM and with a prayer service at 7:30 PM, all at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.
Edna Helen Theodora (Engebretson) Hakel was born on January 18, 1911 in Glenwood, MN to Edwin and Julia (Ordahl) Engebretson. She was baptized and confirmed in Glenwood and graduated from Glenwood High School. She attended and graduated from St. Cloud State College and began a career as a teacher. On July 27, 1940 she was united in marriage to Ernest Hakel in Glenwood, MN. Together they taught school in Kerkhoven and Montevideo Schools before she retired from teaching in 1969. They enjoyed traveling the United States and abroad and enjoyed visiting family and celebrating family occasions during their 56 years of married life. She enjoyed her Norwegian heritage and excelled in making lefse, Norwegian goodies, and rolle pulsa. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and was active in Circle and sang in the Ladies Choir. She belonged to 3 bridge clubs, and found time for knitting, ceramics, sewing, wood refinishing, working with stained glass and hardanger. With declining health, she moved to Annandale to be closer to her family and has been a resident of the Annandale Care Center for the past 3 ½ years.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Iverson and her husband Paul of Annandale, MN; a son, John Hakel and his wife LuAnn of Brooklyn Park, MN; 5 grandchildren: Michelle Knick, Eric Iverson, Marc Iverson, Stephanie Hakel and Nathan Hakel; 9 great grandchildren and a sister, Pat Chisholm of Largo, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernie in 1997; 5 brothers and 3 sisters.
