Edward Richard Schumann was born on June 22, 1933, in Cook County, Illinois, to Edward and Gwendolyn (Bock) Schumann.  He attended school in Maine Township, Park Ridge, Illinois. Following high school he attended the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and completed his bachelor and master’s degrees.  Ed served in the US Army from 1956 to 1958 (active).  His service in the Army included chemical research at Fort Detrick, Maryland, where he formed many lifelong friendships.  Edward worked as a salesman and agronomist at National Plant Food Institute and St. Paul Ammonia.  His real dream was to farm, so he purchased land in Chippewa County and spent weekends farming while still working at St. Paul Ammonia.  He married Carole (Rindahl) on July 13, 1968, at Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church in St. Paul, MN.  In 1969 Ed left his employment in St. Paul and moved to Chippewa County to farm full time, which lasted into the 1980's when farming took a downturn.  He retrained as a commodity broker and opened an office in Montevideo, Farmers Hedging Company, where he worked until retirement.

As a boy and young man, Ed enjoyed learning about and hunting birds and waterfowl, especially duck hunting.  Music was another source of joy to him, specifically dancing to polka music.  After moving to the farm, Ed became an expert at fixing and repairing anything with whatever materials and tools were available. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Havelock, where he served as chairperson and financial secretary.  For many years he would walk the 2.5 miles to church and refused rides even in snowstorms. Ed also enjoyed planting extensive vegetable gardens and harvesting the produce to share with his friends. Often described as loquacious, Ed enjoyed visiting with and getting to know people.  He was an avid reader of non-fiction and historical fiction, especially in his later years when he was no longer able to fix things and garden.  He also made it a priority to stay in touch with friends and relatives.  He was the catalyst for several reunions around the country with army friends.  Ed and Carole moved into Montevideo in 2014, and he told many, “I really miss the farm.”

Edward is survived by his wife, Carole; children Kristen Hewitt, Carrington, ND; Heidi (Patrick) Ames, Canton, NY; Carey (Ryan) Sinykin, Plymouth, MN; six grandchildren, Braxton and Calleigh Hewitt; Emily, Hannah, and Sarah Ames; and Murphy Sinykin; brother-in-law, Alvin Barden; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Gloria and Orland Rasmussen; and one niece and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Diane Barden; mother-in-law and father-in-law Gladys and Ray Rindahl; and son-in-law, Eric Hewitt.
