Elizabeth "Bette" Lundgren

March 31, 1935 — December 15, 2014

Elizabeth "Bette" Lundgren, of Montevideo died Monday December 15, 2014 at Homefront First at the age of 79.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the Church of St. Joseph in Montevideo.  Fr. Paul Timmerman will be the Celebrant and burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of the service on Saturday.

Elizabeth Doreen (Roisen) Lundgren was born March 31, 1935 in the Montevideo Hospital to Oscar and Sadie (Eid) Roisen.  She grew up in Stony Run Township and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1952.  After graduation, she worked at Union Oil Company in Montevideo, and then attended Gustavus Adolphus College.  On January 15, 1955, Elizabeth married Paul D. Lundgren at St. Joan of Arc Church in Minneapolis.  They lived in Montevideo where Paul was a veterinarian.  She worked at the Minnesota Dept. of Employment Security and the Educational Media Center before she returned to college at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall to complete her BA degree in Education in 1973.  She later earned an MS in Education and was elected to Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society at St. Cloud State University.  She was an elementary teacher in Montevideo until her retirement in 1997.  She and two of her peers researched and developed the K-2 Multi-age program.

She was an avid golfer and won the women’s Montevideo club championship 22 times.  She enjoyed reading, baking, doing the daily crossword puzzle, embroidering, tending her flowers, watching and feeding birds, having coffee with friends, and spending time at their lake cottage.  They wintered in Texas from 1998 - 2010.  She was an active member of the Church of St. Joseph, serving as a Eucharistic minister, minister of the Word, assisting with funeral lunches, and over the years was a member of St. Joseph’s Church Council, the Worship board, president of the Women’s Society, and served on the board of the Diocesan Council of Women.

She was patriotic, interested in politics, and followed day-to-day world events.  She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.  She served as an election judge for many years.  She was proud that her husband, son, and granddaughter served in the United States military.

She was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in November, 2013 and lived independently until November when she moved into Homefront First in Montevideo.

Bette is survived by a son, Dr. John (wife Sonya); grandchildren: Alexandra, Jack, and John (J.C.); twelve nieces and nephews; four step nieces and nephews; three cousins: and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Roger Lundgren;

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Paul December 30, 2013; two sisters: Eunice and Alice; and all of her aunts and uncles.

She was grateful to Fr. Timmerman and Deacon Bob for their spiritual ministry, all of the doctors who attended to her medical care, the oncology nurses, Hospice and the staff of Homefront for their compassionate care.
