Elmira Mae Huseby was born on May 12, 1929 in Shible Township, near Appleton, MN, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Schulte) Grages. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Shible Township. She attended parochial school at Immanuel Lutheran, and later attended Appleton Public School, graduating in 1947. She married Eddie Huseby at Immanuel Lutheran on April 19, 1950. They were blessed with 4 children: Kathryn, Kenneth, Ronald and Jon.
Eddie and Elmira bought their first home in Milan and moved to Montevideo in 1955. Elmira stayed home with the children when they were young, while doing some babysitting for other families. She also did baking, making mouth watering doughnuts, pies, cookies, bars, cakes and Christmas treats. Her homemade bread and caramel rolls were out of this world. After her children were all in school, she began working outside of the home. Her first job was at the local Ben Franklin store. She later was employed at Associated Loan, ECSU and ended her career as an Outreach Worker for Prairie Five Community Action Council in Montevideo. Elmira was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church serving on several boards, the ladies’ circle and serving lunch at funerals and weddings. She was a member of the Montevideo VFW Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society.
Eddie and Elmira enjoyed spending time with their family, extended family and neighbors. They had picnics in the backyard, took the kids to the outdoor theater, played cards with friends, visited family almost every weekend and just enjoyed the simpler times of their generation. They enjoyed many years of camping at Lobster Lake. Later in life they did some traveling to Florida, Colorado, Oregon, Hawaii and made many trips to Iowa for weekend reunions with Eddie’s “Army buddies” and their wives.
Elmira is survived by her children: Kathryn (Mark) Christenson, of Montevideo; Ronald (Linda) Huseby of Montevideo; and Jon (Debbie) Huseby, of Willmar; her grandchildren; Angela (Kyle) Kranz; Adam (Katelyn) Christenson; Ryan Huseby, Erin Huseby, Jared (Heidi) Huseby; Megan (Jon) Schwaegerl; Matthew (Danielle) Huseby; great-grandchildren; Markus, Jenna, and Joshua Kranz; Kaymen and Anden Christenson; Marienau and Nya Huseby; Addison and Griffin Schwaegerl; and Bryson Huseby, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Elmira was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie in 2003; son, Kenneth in 1972; her parents; her brothers, sisters, in-laws and their spouses; and other extended family and friends.
Elmira’s family would like to thank you for your attendance today, for your many warm expressions of sympathy and for your loving concern during her time at Luther Haven. Your support for our family will always be remembered.
