Esther Bangsund, of Montevideo, died on Wednesday, May 3, 2000 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 97.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday May 6, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. at Saron Lutheran Church with Rev. Steve Rheingans officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Esther Bangsund was born on September 9,1902 in Preston Township of Fillmore County, MN to Willard Elmer and Katherine (Williams) Mills. The century home was deeded to the Mills family by President James Buchanan in 1858. She attended rural schools and graduated from Preston High School and later graduated from Winona State Teachers College. Esther taught elementary school for several years. On November 28, 1939 she was united in marriage to Bertram Bangsund in Preston, MN. They lived and farmed in Leenthrop Township east of Montevideo until moving into Montevideo in 1990. She was a long-time member of Saron Lutheran Church where she directed the ladies choir, taught Sunday School and was a member of the ladies aid. She was a past member of the Sons of Norway, Senior Citizens, and the Chippewa Co. Historical Society. Esther was currently a resident of the Luther Haven Nursing Home.
She is survived by one daughter, Katherine Bangsund of Lincoln, NE; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Bangsund of Brooklyn Park, MN; two grandchildren: Brent and Aleisha; one sister-in-law, Alice Bangsund of Montevideo, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Bertram in 1995; one son, David in 1993; and one brother, Walter Mills.
