Esther Mills

Esther M. Mills, of Montevideo, died on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home at the age of 103. Funeral Services will be conducted on Monday, March 3, 2008 at 1:30 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Montevideo with Rev. Paul Woolverton officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon and evening with the family present from 4 - 6 P.M. with a prayer service at 5:30 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Esther May (Sunderland) Mills was born on October 9, 1904 in Greenville, IA to Junia and Laura (Kindelspire) Sunderland. She was baptized in Iowa and moved to the Montevideo area with her family when she was about 10 years old. She was confirmed at Rosewood United Methodist Church. She attended rural schools and graduated from Montevideo High School as the class Valedictorian. She attended Normal Training in Montevideo and taught in rural District #22. On June 16, 1926 she was united in marriage to Maurice Mills in Montevideo. They lived and farmed in Havelock Township until 1979 when she moved into Montevideo following Maurice's death. She has been a resident of the Luther Haven Nursing Home for the past three years. She was a long-time member of Rosewood Methodist Church and currently is a member of the United Methodist Church in Montevideo. She was a President of the Women's Society, a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent at Rosewood and had been a 4-H leader. She loved to do crossword puzzles, garden, knit, crochet, tat, make lace tablecloths, play cards with friends and tell jokes. She is survived by seven children: Lois Robinson of Crystal, MN; Howard Mills and his wife Gloria of Hobbs, NM; Joyce Domke and her husband Clarence of Rogers, MN; Dorothy Hutchens and her husband John of Montevideo; Lynn Mills and his wife Maxine of Montevideo; Beverly Loose and her husband Vernon of Montevideo and Gerald Mills of Champlin, MN; 22 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; several great, great grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Maus of Montevideo as well as by a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Maurice in 1978; four grandchildren; four brothers: Harry, Art, Robert and Donald Sunderland and a son-in-law, Gordon Robinson.
