Florence "Flo" Geneva (Paulson) McMillin was born on February 5, 1920 in Montevideo, MN to George and Bertina (Peterson) Paulson, the youngest of nine children. She attended school in Montevideo until she was ten, when she moved with her parents, sister Viola, and brothers Earl and Verdi to a tiny log cabin four miles north of LaPorte, MN. This was a truly rustic living situation with no electricity or running water. The girls would walk to LaPorte High School, where Florence graduated from in 1938. After a brief journey to California to find work, the family returned to Walker, MN to run Long Bow Lodge and Resort on Leech Lake. Florence worked at the resort until enlisting in the Navy on September 25, 1942. She worked as a Morse Code decoder and typist until her discharge on June 14, 1944. On February 4, 1944 she was united in marriage to Walter (Mac) McMillin, a career Marine, in Jacksonville, FL. They lived in California, Virginia and Florida and had no children. The marriage ended tragically on March 26, 1953 when the helicopter Mac was piloting on a training mission crashed and he was killed instantly. Florence never re-married. She worked at various jobs including as a postal clerk, school teacher and Secretary to the Administrator at Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis. During retirement, she lived in Arizona and Minnesota. Flo like to play golf, travel (Italy and Norway), play a card game with her sister Vi called " Nickels" and listen to fine music. In later life, she especially liked the music of Josh Groban. She loved family gatherings and having visitors and was known for her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. As Flo's health began to diminish, she chose to move back to Montevideo, where she resided at Copper Glen Assisted Living for several years. With their loving care and support, Flo was able to maintain an independent life style as much as possible. When Flo needed more assistance, she moved to Wellstead of Rogers in September of 2009, where she was cared for during a difficult part of her life with respect, dignity and providing comfort for her last days.. Florence is survived by six nieces and six nephews She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Mabel Paulson and Viola Beaird; and her six brothers: Clark, Oscar, Melvin, Earl, Floyd and Verdi Paulson.
