Frances Gilsrud, of Montevideo, died on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at the Chippewa Co.-Montevideo Hospital at the age of 92. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Donald S. McKee officiating. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery of rural Watson. Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon and evening with the family present from 4 - 7 P.M. and with a prayer service at 6:45 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Frances Ida (Simpson) Gilsrud was born on January 23, 1917 in Tunsburg Township of Chippewa County, MN to Samuel and Anna (Vellekson) Simpson. She was baptized in 1917 and confirmed in 1930 at Zion Lutheran Church of rural Watson by Rev. Strom. She attended District 28 school and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1935. After completing Normal Training at Windom College in 1936, she taught Pre-Kindergarten for two years. On June 11, 1938 she was united in marriage to Albie Gilsrud in Milbank, SD. They lived and farmed in rural Montevideo. Frances taught country school for several years before she was required to get a Bachelors Degree to continue teaching. She attended the University of Minnesota at Morris, graduating in 1964. She taught music at St. Joseph Catholic School before teaching 3rd grade from 1967 to 1979 at Appleton Elementary. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School, Bible School, Vacation Bible School and was Superintendent of the Sunday School. She was active in Ladies Choir, Altar Guild, Funeral Committee and numerous other Circles. She was also a member of the Sons of Norway, active in Home Extension and a charter member of the Zion Restoration Society. Frances had a love for children and demonstrated that by her compassion for her own children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She is survived by three children: Kerrine (and Maynard) Thomsom of Wolverton, MN; Albie (and Connie) Gilsrud, Jr. of Austin, MN and Robert (and Paula) Gilsrud of Richmond, MN; eight grandchildren: Karl Thomson; Norval Thomson; Kari (Thomson) Cantin; Jamie Gilsrud; Tina (Gilsrud) Laury; Matthew Gilsrud; Justin Gilsrud; and Amber Gilsrud; seven great grandchildren: Andrew and Kelsey Thomson; Parker, Grant and Connor Thomson; Samuel and Kristina Gilsrud and Alex and Autumn Laury; two great-great grandchildren: Treyton Thomson and Mayson Zimmer; a sister Ruby Anderson of Montevideo as well as by a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Albie in 1991; a grandson, Adam Gilsrud; three sisters: Lila Nelson; Hazel Addison and Effie Lapaglia and by a brother, Ernest Simpson.
