Gary Larsen was born on January 14, 1948 in Montevideo to Merlin and Margaret (Nicolai) Larsen. He grew up in Maynard and attended school in Maynard graduating in 1966. Following graduation from high school he attended the University of Minnesota Morris, graduating in June of 1970.
He first worked as the manager of Woolworth stores in Waukesha, Wisc. and then in Hancock, Michigan. Gary was married and later divorced. He then moved to the Twin Cities where he managed 3 Tom Thumb stores. He then went to work for the Schwann’s company first as a route driver and eventually as a sales trainer, where he traveled all over the United States. Gary moved to California to manage the first Schwann’s in that state. He eventually moved back to Minnesota in 2007 and worked for Terminex in Minneapolis. He retired in 2014.
Gary enjoyed his work, and enjoyed the people he worked with. He put his all into every position he held. He was also very passionate about politics and Minnesota sports teams. Gary loved to discuss and debate with anyone who would take him on regarding politics. He loved the Minnesota Twins, Vikings, Timberwolves, Lynx and Gophers and would watch them as often as he could. Gary was a walking encyclopedia when it came to sports statistics. He could remember dates, plays, players names and other statistics at the drop of a hat. He also enjoyed golf and fishing. Gary was a social person and loved being with people and meeting new people. Family was very important to him, especially his niece, Emily and nephew, Darrin.
Gary is survived by his sister, Mary (Dale) Rasmussen; his niece, Emily Rasmussen; nephew, Darrin Rasmussen as well as other extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merlin and Margaret Larsen.
