Charlotte Genevieve (Kostad) Wenskaug was born on February 25, 1919 in Lac qui Parle County to Nels and Laura (Oien) Kostad. Gen was the 3rd of 8 children in the family. She was baptized and confirmed at Madison Lutheran Church. Gen attended a country school and Madison High School. She married Ivan Wenskaug on March 24, 1941. They lived in Milan until Ivan passed away in 1985. Gen would remain in their home until 2009 when a fall would necessitate a move to Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo.
Gen was a wonderful homemaker and mother to two wonderful daughters: Gayle and Karen. She was active in Kviteseid Lutheran church. She faithfully taught Tuesday school for many years, attended ladies aid and circle, and served as an officer for the WELCA as well as serving as congregational treasurer.
Gen loved her handi work: embroidery, quilting, sewing, and baking. Her butterhorn rolls were renowned as were her date filled cookies. She also enjoyed travel and she was able to travel the United States with her family and friends. Family remembers that she diligently wrote letters to her loved ones weekly and kept a daily journal for years.
Gen would share her handiwork with others. She designed and sewed 160 baby dresses with knit tops and vintage pillow case skirts that she sold through a boutique in Wayzetta, MN. She also would give away dozens of dresses to new born baby girls among her circle of family and friends.
Gen is survived by her two daughters: Gayle (Rollie) Olson of Miami Beach, FL and Karen Zimmerman of St. Louis Park, MN; 4 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ivan in 1985; her great-grandson, Wyatt in 2012; and five sisters and two brothers.
