George Sommerfeld, 91, of Montevideo, MN died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at the Clara City Care Center in Clara City, MN.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 3, 2002 at 1:30 P.M. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Rev. Leo Deitemeyer will officiate and interment will be at Terrace Lawn Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be held Sunday afternoon and evening at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo, MN.
George Adolph Paul Sommerfeld was born September 20, 1910 in Camp Release Township, Lac Qui Parle County, MN the son of Wilhelm and Ernestina (Zahn) Sommerfeld. He was baptized at home September 26, 1910 and confirmed May 31, 1925 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Omro Township, Yellow Medicine County, MN. George attended rural schools. He was united in marriage with Corinne Cole July 3, 1940 at Canby, MN. They farmed in Lac Qui Parle County until 1974 and moved to Montevideo in 1977. Corinne died in 1982. George was united in marriage with Betty (Fonder) Rice October 16, 1986 at Webster, SD. George had been a resident of the Clara City Care Center the past five months. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and he enjoyed crafts, gardening, stamp and coin collecting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; four children: Joan Sommerfeld of San Francisco, CA, Sharon McCoy and her husband William of San Diego, CA, George Sommerfeld, Jr. and his wife Margaret of Shoreview, MN, and Sandra Hunley of Brooklyn Center, MN; three grandchildren: Jodi and Jayne Sommerfeld and Shannon Hunley; one sister, Myrtle Rogge of Montevideo, MN; and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Corinne; and four brothers: Christ, Henry, Ervin, and Arthur.
