George Thiel of Montevideo, the husband of Mary Margret Thiel, died on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at the Chippewa Co.-Montevideo Hospital at the age of 91.
Memorial services will be conducted on Monday, April 16, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Donald S. McKee officiating. Interment will be in the Mellette Cemetery in Mellette, SD. Anderson Funeral Home of Montevideo is in charge of funeral arrangements.
George Calvin Thiel was born on March 18, 1916 in Ashton, SD to Charles and Louisa (Larsen) Thiel. He grew up in Ashton and graduated from Ashton High School in 1933.On May 31, 1938 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Haven. Several years following her death he was united in marriage to Mary Margaret Lillemoe on November 4, 1998 in Montevideo. He lived for many years in Brentford, SD where he was an Area Regional Manager for the South Dakota Wheat Growers, before moving to Montevideo in 1998. He spent a number of years wintering in Sun City, AZ. He was a lifelong member of the Brentwood United Church of Christ. He had been a member of the Brentwood Masonic Lodge, the Shriners and Scottish Rite in Aberdeen, SD and Lions International. He enjoyed watching Minnesota sports teams and had played baseball when he was young.
He is survived by his wife Mary Margaret; 2 sons: Gerald Thiel of Los Angeles, CA and Leslie (and LeeAnna) Thiel of Rapid City, SD; a step-son, Raleigh (and Cathie) Lillemoe of Alexandria, MN; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Mary Nelson and Wilma Frost, both of Ashton, SD as well as by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Dorothy, a daughter, Sally Thiel; a great-granddaughter, Macy Loren Simpson, a brother, Raymond Thiel and by a step-son, Jon Lillemoe.
