Glenn Sumner

April 29, 1924 — January 19, 2013

Funeral service was 11:00 AM, Wednesday, January 23, at the First Presbyterian Church in  Dawson with Pastor Herbert Rotunda officiating: scripture lessons were: Psalm 23, Isaiah 44:6-8, John 10:11-16; organist, Florence Gebur accompanied the congregational hymns of “How Great Thou Art” and “The Day Of Resurrection;” and Janelle Kemen sang “In the Garden” and “Softly and Tenderly.”  Honorary casketbearers were all of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, Allen Moe, Donald Lindblad, Bob Pehrson, and Tim Sumner and the active casketbearers were Roger Swenson, Mike Swenson, Bryon Lundy, Daniel Sumner, Keith Sumner and Byron Grinager.  Interment was in Terrace Lawn Memory Garden Cemetery in rural Montevideo.

Visitation was Tuesday, January 22, from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home.

Glenn Ellis Sumner was born April 29, 1924, in Maxwell Township, Lac Qui Parle County, MN, to Perry and Mamie (Fraizer) Sumner.  He was baptized and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Dawson.  Glenn served in the State Guard in the 1940's.  Ardella and Glenn Sumner were united in marriage on July 29, 1945 at the Riverside Lutheran Church in Dawson, now Grace Lutheran.  They resided on the family farm in Maxwell Township, rural Boyd.  Six children were born to this union.  Glenn served on the Maxwell Tonwship Board for 16 years.

Glenn died Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Chippewa County - Montevideo Hospital at the age of 88.

He is survived by children: Bonnie (Erwin) Hansmann of Dixon, MO, Dale (Barbara) Sumner of Portland, OR, Weldon (Sandy) Sumner of Rolfe, IA, Katherine (Steve) Haakenson of Eagle Grove, IA, Arlen Sumner of Boyd and Michele (Theodore) Nelson of rural Madison; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and another due in March: Leslie (LaDonna) Hansmann and their children, Auston and Torianna; AmyJune (Terry) McClure and their children, Joshua, Arron and Noelle; Scott Sumner and his children, Alexandria and Cody; Krystal (Curtis) Bedwell and their children, Colin and Evan; Douglas Sumner; Lisa (Matthew) Anderson and their son, Colton; Laura (Aaron) Provin and their children, Nichole, MaKayla and Tharon; Melisa Haakenson and her children, Steven and Kristina; Randy Nelson; Amanda (Travis) Paradis with their first child due in March; and Patrick Nelson; one brother, Harold (Marcella) Sumner of Boyd; one sister, Leone Grinager of Brooklyn Park, MN; many nieces and nephews, other family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Ardella on October 19, 2012; three brothers: Merrill Sumner, Kenneth (Helen) Sumner and one in infancy; three sisters: Gladys (Elmer) Soehren, Verlan Grinager and one in infancy; and grandson, Troy Haakenson.
