Haakon John Henstein died on Friday, January 30, 2004 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home at the age of 90.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, February 2, 2004 at 10:30 AM at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Greg Gabriel officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday afternoon and evening, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo with the family present from 5-7:00 P.M.
Haakon John Henstein was born March 31, 1913 at Krako, Norway the son of Olaf and Anna (Milchiorson) Henstein. He was baptized June 8, 1913 at Vik Lutheran Church in Helgeland Norway. Haakon moved with his family to the United States in 1923 and attended school in Watson. He was confirmed at Watson Lutheran Church November 11, 1928. Haakon graduated from Montevideo High School in 1934 and had 2 years of training at the Appleton Agricultural College. Haakon was united in marriage with Ethel Marks July 12, 1952 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo. He worked as a farm hand for many years, then for the Milwaukee Road Railroad for 10 years before going to work for the Montevideo Park Department. He retired as Foreman in 1983. Haakon was very active with the Boy Scouts and Order of Arrow. He received the Silver Beaver in 1982 and enjoyed all Scouting activities. He enjoyed landscaping and gardening. He was a member of the Lions Club, Odd Fellows and a life member of the Sons of Norway. Haakon was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, the men’s club, and the Sunday School program.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel: one son: Robert Henstein and his wife Debbie of Cottage Grove, MN; three brothers: Harold Henstein and his wife Jeri of Montevideo, MN, Paul Henstein and his wife Mary of Marshalltown, IA, and John Henstein and his wife Kathy of Oregon City, OR; three sisters: Agnes Oie and her husband Arnie of Glencoe, MN, Helen Coffey and her husband John of Kalamath Falls, OR, and Georgine Nelson of Vista, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother-in-law, Harvey Nelson.
