Hazel Abel, of Montevideo, died on Wednesday, February 24, 1999 at the Chippewa Co - Montevideo Hospital at the age of 80.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, February 28, 1999 at 2:00 PM at United Methodist Church in Montevideo with Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Burial will be in the Florida Church Cemetery near Canby, MN.
Visitation will be Saturday afternoon and evening at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo, MN and for one hour prior to services at the church.
Hazel Luella Mikkelson was born on February 17, 1919 in Ortley, SD to Elmer and Tilda (Nelson) Mikkelson. She was baptized in March, 1919 in Ortley, SD and confirmed in May of 1932 in Sisseton, SD. She graduated from Canby High School in 1936 and attended Nurse’s Training at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, MN. She served as a nurse in the US Army during World War II, including about 3 years in England. On August 5, 1945 she was united in marriage to William “Ted” Abel at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Canby, MN. They lived in the Canby area where she was a director of a day activity center. until moving to Prescott, AZ in 1967. While in Prescott, she worked as a nurse at a VA facility. In 1977 they moved to Mountain Home, AR and moved to Montevideo, MN in 1985. She was currently residing at Copper Glen in Montevideo. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Montevideo and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, making greeting cards, fabric painting, needlework, playing cards, reading good books, and reading devotional books in the morning.
She is survived by one daughter, Judy Dye of Ethelsville, AL; five grandchildren: Michael Johnson and Erik Johnson, Elise and David Mugge, Jena and Don Montgomery, Matthew Crisfield; two great-granddaughters: Brenna Mugge and Cassia Mugge; two brothers: Herb and Dorothy Mikkelson of Sioux Falls, SD and Ervin and Darlene Mikkelson of Ortonville, MN; and two sisters: Gladys Strand of Montevideo, MN and Esther and Don Millard of St. Cloud, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ted in 1996; two sons: James in 1974 and Steven in 1979; one daughter, Anna Marie Abel in 1998; and one brother-in-law, Hans Strand.
