Hazel Adela (Skogrand) Phillips

Montevideo

Hazel Phillips, of Montevideo, died on Friday, December 30, 2005 at her home at Brookside Manor in Montevideo at the age of 89.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at 1:30 PM at Jevnaker Lutheran Church of rural Montevideo with Rev. Gregory Gabriel officiating.  Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery.  Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening, with the family present from 5 - 7 PM and with a prayer service at 6:30 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.

Hazel Adela (Skogrand) Phillips was born on October 13, 1916 in Chippewa County, MN to Anton and Helena (Svingen) Skogrand.  She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Watson, MN and was confirmed at Jevnaker Lutheran Church.  She attended rural schools in District 63 and as an eighth-grader qualified for the State Spelling Bee and received an award as the top student in Chippewa County. On September 12, 1944 she was united in marriage to Clyde Phillips at the Big Bend Lutheran Parsonage.  They lived and farmed in Rosewood Township for 4 years and spent the next 57 years living and farming in Mandt Township. They also enjoyed wintering in Texas for 22 years.  They moved to Brookside Manor in Montevideo this past September. Hazel was a lifelong member of Jevnaker Lutheran Church, was active in its Altar Guild and women’s groups and spent many hours as a volunteer at the Luther Haven Nursing Home.  She was  a member of a homemakers group and the MN Valley Antique Farm Power and Machinery Association.  She was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, was a 4-H leader and a member of the Extension Service for a number of years.  Her many interests included sewing clothes, baking, flower gardening, quilting, all forms of needle art, stained glass creations, styling hair, reading, sharing her Norwegian heritage with her family, and being a welcoming hostess. She was a loving wife, dedicated mother and a friend to all.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde; three daughters: Susan Swanson and her husband Doug of West Des Moines, IA, Sally Phillips and Jim Helling of Plymouth, MN and Jane Laub and her husband Mark of Oak Grove, MN; three grandchildren: Jason Swanson and his wife Sue; Stephanie Swanson and friend Kelby Downing and Stacy Lindholm and her husband Peter; three great-grandchildren: Benjamin and Jacob Swanson and Anna Lindholm; as well as by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers and sisters: twins Arthur and Juliette, Amy, Julian, twins Milton and Melvin, Marvin, Evelyn Gulden and a stillborn sister.
