Herman Hofstad

Herman Hofstad, formerly of Milan, died on Friday, December 16, 2011 in Wauwatosa, WI at the age of 89. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, December 19, 2011 at Kviteseid Lutheran Church in Milan with Rev. Cathie Rhodes officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Monday starting at 12:00 noon. Herman Jacob Hofstad was born on January 4, 1922 in Haywarden, Saskatchewan, Canada to Rasmus and Leanora (Jordbru) Hofstad. As a child he moved to the Rugby, ND area, where he grew up and attended school. In 1940 he graduated from Oak Grove High School in Fargo, ND. In 1944 he graduated from Augsburg College with a degree in Education. On August 4, 1946 he was united in marriage to Esther Aadland in Minneapolis, MN. He taught school in Kensington MN and was a Principal at Clara City, MN before becoming a Superintendent of Schools in Hitterdahl, MN in 1951. In 1958 he became the Superintendent of Schools in Odessa, MN, where he served until taking the same position in Milan, MN in 1966. He retired in 1983 and lived in Milan until 2010, when he moved to Wauwatosa, WI. While in Milan he was a member of Kviteseid Lutheran Church and the Milan Lions Club. He enjoyed gun smithing and trapshooting, painting, doing Norwegian wood carving and built a lake cabin. He was an avid reader, enjoyed airplanes, cars and magazines, and liked to engage in political discussions. He is survived by three children: Dawn Strommen and her husband Tim of Anoka, MN, Mark Hofstad and his wife Carol of Lakeland, FL, and Sandra Mullooly and her husband J.P. of Wauwatosa, WI; seven grandchildren: Alexi (Jason) Strommen Noeldner, Siri (Jon) Strommen Campbell, Micah Natterstad, Erika (and Jim) Korn, Samuel (and Melissa)Strommen, Ian Mullooly, and Ethan Hofstad; and six great grandchildren: Linnea, Theodore, Eowyn, Lucy, Ivy and Nora. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Esther in 2006, and by a sister Lilly in infancy.
