Idamarie Sletten, formerly of Montevideo, died on Saturday, October 10, 2009 in Shepherdstown, WV at the age of 87. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 1:30 P.M. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday afternoon and evening with family present from 5 - 7 PM and with a prayer service at 6:30 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Idamarie (Austin) Sletten was born on March 10, 1922 in Montevideo, MN to Wallace and Clara (Green) Austin. She attended schools in Montevideo and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1940. She attended Mankato Teachers College in Mankato, MN for two years before being united in marriage to Warren Sletten on October 23, 1942 in Monroe, LA. They lived in Montevideo for many years where she was a long-time member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and was active in the Elisabeth circle, taught Sunday School and sang in the Ladies Choir. She was active in the community, involved in Women's Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Job's Daughters and belonged to several card clubs, diet clubs, coffee clubs, and was the sunshine lady and corresponding secretary for all. She was active in her children's activities, serving as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and was active in the band mother's club. They moved to the greater Washington D.C. area in 1970, where she was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Springfield, VA. She sang lead with the Sweet Adelines from Vienna Falls, VA, winning first place and competing internationally in London, England. She also sang in the Sweet Adelines in the Tidewater area of VA. It was during that time that she began writing and journaling her life's memoirs, which recently she had made into a book. Following Warren's retirement in 1978, they moved back to Montevideo and spent winters in McAllen, TX. Following Warren's death in 1996, she moved in with her daughter and family in Charles Town, WV. During her senior years in Charles Town she was active with correspondence and was a member of the Jefferson County Betsy Ross Homemaker's Club. She belonged to the county Volunteer Outreach Program, where she sent out correspondence and good will cards to shut-ins. Idamarie was an honorary member of the WV MTN.Mamas Singing Redhatalines of the Red Hat Society. For the past several years she has lived at a respite care center called Hillcrest Manor, at Greenfield Assisted Living Center and most recently at Canterbury Nursing Care Center in Shepherdstown, WV. She was a wonderful military and officer's wife and devoted mother, grandmother and kind friend. She loved life, people, music and socializing. She met everyone with her cheery smile and sunshiny personality. She is survived by three children: John (and Kathy) Sletten of Lansdale, PA; Richard Sletten of Phoenix, AZ and Christine (and Rick) Leigh of Charles Town, WV; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband Warren in 1996.
