Iola Borene, formerly of Montevideo, died on Friday, November 26, 2010 in Northfield, MN at the age of 96. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Salem Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Matt Philaya officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Iola (Lanes) Borene was born on September 11, 1914 in Leenthrop Township of Chippewa Co., MN to Ole and Anna (Mjunes) Lanes. She was baptized and confirmed at Black Oak Lake Lutheran Church in rural Montevideo. She attended rural school and graduated from Montevideo High School. She attended Windom Normal School and St. Cloud Teachers College and taught in rural schools for several years. On August 22, 1943 she was united in marriage to Harry Borene at Black Oak Lake Lutheran Church. They farmed on the Borene farm in rural Montevideo. In 1945 their twins, Benay and Bernard were born. In 1948 they moved into Montevideo while Harry continued to farm, commuting daily. When the twins started school, Iola returned to teaching and taught again in country schools, in Maynard, MN and for a number of years at Maria Sanford School in Montevideo before retiring at the age of 60. Upon retirement, they renovated the family farmplace and moved back to the farm. She enjoying time with family, traveling, playing cards, gardening, talking about teaching and wintering in Yuma, AZ for twelve years. In 1992 they moved to an apartment in Montevideo. Iola moved to Brookside Manor in Montevideo in 2003 and to the Northfield Retirement Center in Northfield, MN in 2006. She was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, participating in Dorcus Circle, Salem Quilters and Women of the ELCA. She is survived by children: Benay (and Richard) Jaeger of Glenwood, MN and Surprise, AZ and Bernard (and Linda) Borene of Northfield, MN; six grandchildren: Amy, Ann, Steven, Mark, Matthew, and Kimberly and twelve great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry in 1993; six brothers: Arthur, Victor, Noel, Lloyd, Walter and Harold Lanes; and four sisters: Ovidia Ludwig, Edna Gay, Helen Johnson and Alice Moe.
