Irene Schmidtke, of Montevideo, died on Thursday, April 17, 2008 at her home at the age of 89. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Johns Lutheran Church in rural Montevideo with Rev. Ronald Hobbie officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening with the family present from 5 - 7 P.M. and with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Irene Victoria (Garrison-Pipke) Schmidtke was born on November 17, 1918 in St. Paul, MN to Harry and Martha (Goetz) Garrison. She was baptized in St. Paul, MN. She was raised by Bill and Ida Pipke. in Omro Township of Yellow Medicine County, MN, attended St. Johns's Parochial School and was confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church of Omro. On November 3, 1938 she was united in marriage to Luthard Schmidtke at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Omro Township. They lived and farmed in Sparta Township until retiring. She was an active member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Sparta Township and was a Sunday School Teacher. She was a weather watcher for many years for KSAX before giving it up a couple of years ago. She enjoyed sewing, flowers, gardening, working on the farm and helping with family and grandkids. She especially enjoyed the visits of Chase, Cole and Callie. She is survived by a son, Kenneth Schmidtke and his wife Jan of Montevideo, MN; a daughter, LuElla Johnsrud of Montevideo, MN; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Luthard in 2001; an infant grandson, Kenneth L. Schmidtke, Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Faye Schmidtke; a son-in-law, Melvin Johnsrud; one brother and two sisters.
