Irma Hoium

September 30, 1921 — June 11, 2009

Funeral service was at 11:00 AM, Monday, June 15, at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Kendall Stelter officiating; memories of Irma written by the family was read by Pastor Kendall; organist, Chris Lehne accompanied the singing of "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "In the Garden", "Borning Cry" and "Jesus Loves Me." Brad Hoium, Nick Knock, Randy Hiepler, Bruce Hoium, Duane Oftedahl and Cliff Mogard were casketbearers and interment was in Augusta Cemetery in Marietta. Irma Maxine Hoium was born on September 30, 1921, to Herbert and Sadie (Westfield) Shaw in Canby, MN. She was baptized and on June 14, 1936, confirmed at Augusta Lutheran Church in Marietta. She graduated from the Marietta High School. Before her marriage to Oscar Hoium on December 24, 1946, in Canby, she worked as a telephone operator and after, not only a housewife and homemaker, she wrote the Nassau news for the Western Guard. They lived in Marietta, Madison and Nassau before moving to Dawson in 1989. She enjoyed crossword and word search puzzles, baking and cooking, taking pictures, gardening, cats, dogs and birds, going for rides, visiting family, and coffee and fellowship with family and friends. She also enjoyed listening to the Twins and Vikings and then discussing with her sons and listening to the broadcasts of Grace Lutheran Church. On February 12, 2009, she entered the Johnson Memorial Home. Surrounded by her family, she died on Thursday morning, June 11, 2009, at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 11 days. Irma is survived by her seven children: Judi (Ernie) Eggert of Boyd, Stan (Berni) Hoium of West St. Paul, Larry (Barbara) Hoium of Brookings, SD, June (Don) Granander of Andover, Donald Hoium of Big Lake, Bill (Paula) Hoium of Big Lake and Mark (Doreen) Hoium of Madison; 13 grandchildren: Teresa (Mike) Petersen, Carla (Keith) Hartneck, Amanda Eggert (and special friend, Amanda Zenoby) and Amy Eggert (and special friend, Kevin Serny); Chad (Suzanne) Gilman and Kevin Gilman; Pastor Elizabeth Hoium, Michael Hoium and Caitlin Hoium; Patrick Hoium and Joseph Hoium; and Bradley Hoium and Casey Hoium; 8 great-grandchildren: Milana Petersen, Bubba Peterson, Alex Hartneck, Justin Hartneck, Olivia Eggert, Owen Gilman, Olive Gilman and Cody Hoium; brother, Norman (Susan) Shaw of Alburquerque, NM; nieces, nephews, other family and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Oscar (June 26, 1992); sisters: Velma Mogard and Dorothy Oftedahl; and son-in-law, Donald Peterson.
