James Howard Black

James Black of Montevideo died on Thursday, May 19, 2005 at St. Cloud V.A. Medical Center at the age of 81.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, May 23, 2005 at 11:30 AM Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Donald McKee and Rev. Kurt Hoover officiating. Interment will be in Terrace Lawn Memory Gardens - rural Montevideo.  Visitation will be Sunday afternoon and evening at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo with the family present from 5-7:00 PM and a prayer service at 7:00 PM.

James Howard Black was born on February 4, 1924 in Colome, Trippe County, South Dakota to Ephriam and Rosie (Ketelsen) Black.  He grew up and attended school in Winner, SD.  After leaving school he worked as a welder in the Seattle, WA shipyards until enlisting in the Army in February of 1943.  During World War II he served in Africa, Italy and France where his unit was captured and he became a German POW until the liberation at the end of the war.  After being hospitalized and discharged in December of 1945, he joined his family in Montevideo.  On February 24, 1946 he was united in marriage to Darlene Nyheim at Saron Lutheran Church of Rural Montevideo.  He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad for a short time, then trained for auto body repair.  He worked at Lageson -Nelson Ford Garage for 15 years, then opened Black’s Body Shop on Benson Rd.  He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, American Legion, DAV, POW, VFW and Tuesday Veterans Coffee Group.  He was an avid fisherman, game bird hunter, enjoyed reading westerns,  traveling and the company of his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  He especially enjoyed the trip to Washington, D.C. last August to visit the WW II Memorial.  In October, he entered the VA Hospital in Mpls. and has been in and out of there, Infinia Nursing Home in Willmar and the VA long term care in St. Cloud, where he passed away.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene; two sons: Robert (Sharon) Black of Minnetonka, MN and Steve (Irene) Black of Hiawatha, IA; four grandchildren: Deanna (Mike) Derlein, Jennifer (fiancee Jon Zoss) Black, James (Jade) Black, Cpl. Andrew Black - USMC; two great-grandchildren: Logan Black and Tyler Derlein; one brother: Charles (Mary) Black of St. Paul, MN; three sisters: Vera Engelhaupt of Pierre, SD, Rosa (Gene) Madden of Canoga Park, CA, and Lola (Jim) Kluxdal of Centerville, IA; one sister-in-law: Florence Black of Henderson, MN; two brother-in-laws: Ordell (Vivian) Nyheim of Canton, OH and Paul (Shirley) Nyheim of Montevideo, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Eric Black; parents-in-law: Gustav and Mildred Nyheim; seven sisters: Evelyn Black, Ester Black, Freda (Orton) Paulson, Ima Jean Black, Nona Black, and unnamed twin girls, ten brothers: Albert, Harold, Clarence, Juard, Hughie, Howard, Jessie, Junior, Myrl and Murn.
