James Lien, of Montevideo, died on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 82.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, April 14, 2001 at 11:00 AM at the Mandt Lutheran Church, rural Montevideo. Rev. Gregory Gabriel will officiate and burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Montevideo.
Visitation will be Friday afternoon and evening and with the family from 6 - 7:30 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.
James Lien was born on May 12, 1918 in Pennington, County, MN to Nils and Annetta (Anderson) Lien. He was baptized June 23, 1918 at Ecklund Lutheran Church near Goodridge, MN and confirmed May 8, 1932 at St. Lucas Lutheran Church in Yellow Medicine County. He moved with his family at the age of 6 to a farm near Cottonwood, MN and attended rural schools in District #99 in Yellow Medicine County. In 1940 the family moved to a farm near Montevideo. On July 16, 1944 he was united in marriage to Loraine Severson at Brono Lutheran Church near Montevideo by Rev. J.M. Mason. The moved to a farm north of Montevideo where he farmed. There he joined Mandt Lutheran Church. In addition to farming, he enjoyed working with heavy equipment. He worked with road construction for Johnson Road Co., Tostenson Road Co., Minnesota Valley Improvement Co., and Crosby Construction. He was janitor for a time at Mandt Church and was on the School Board of District #305 (54) in Chippewa County.
He is survived by his wife, Loraine; three daughters: Barbara Nordaune and her husband Lyndon of Glenwood, MN, Virginia Hirschi and her husband John of Rapid City, SD, and Mary Ann Brownley of Rockford, IL; three grandchildren: Dennis (Tina) Nordaune, Jeffrey Nordaune and Laurie (Erick) Larson; two step-grandchildren: Troy Hurd and Brandy (Randy) Bardeleben; two great-grandchildren: Marit and Kearby Larson; one step great-grandchild, Justin Bardeleben; two brothers: Arthur (Lavina) Lien of Montevideo, MN and Norval (Grace) Lien of Montevideo, MN; two sisters: Clara (Vernon) Kaldor of Hillsboro, ND and Alma (Kenneth) Sheane of Wellton, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Clara Eva Lien; one brother, Selmer Lien and his wife Emma; two brothers-in-law: Maynard Kaldor and Hartford Kompelien; and one son-in-law, Merle Hurd.
