James Gilley, of Montevideo, died Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Avera Granite Falls Care Center at the age of 82.
A Celebration of Life for James and his wife Deanna will be held November 11th from 1-4 p.m. at the Warehouse at Toppers. Arrangements are with Anderson - TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo.
James Eugene Gilley was born October 21, 1940 in Hendricks, MN the son of Charles and Nina (Simmons) Gilley. He graduated from Brookings High School and later from SDSU in Brookings, SD. Jim was united in marriage to Deanna Taylor October 31, 1964 in Brookings, SD. They made their home in Montevideo where Jim was the 7th grade life science teacher for almost 40 years. He enjoyed photography, wildlife, camping, golf, and fishing. He also enjoyed pottery, metal working, and going to auctions at SDSU where he would buy computers and microscopes that he would repair and give to students who needed them. Jim was recognized for leading many students over the years through successful projects at the local, regional, state, and national levels.
He is survived by two children: Lisa (Mike) Dupere of Montevideo and Shannon (Katy) Gilley of Rosemount; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Arlan Gilley of Sioux Falls; and five nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Deanna; and a sister, Carol Olson.
