J. Sherman Boraas, of Montevideo, died Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Elim Rehab and Nursing Home in Watertown, MN at the age of 86.
Funeral services will be on Monday, May 18, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Tim Ehling officiating. Interment will be in the Lac qui Parle Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Sunday, May 17, 2015 from 5 - 7 PM at the Anderson-TeBeest Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
J. Sherman Boraas was born on June 17, 1928 at home in Cerro Gordo Township, Lac qui Parle County, MN to Joseph A. and Juella (Winge) Boraas. He was baptized and confirmed at Lac qui Parle Lutheran Church. He graduated from Dawson High School in 1946 and then attended Minneapolis Business College. He served in the US Army from 1950 until 1952 in the 7th Infantry Division in Korea. After his discharge, he attended Augsburg College.
On March 24, 1956, he was united in marriage with Marilyn Soiseth at Christiania Lutheran in Lakeville, MN. Sherman and Marilyn then moved to Chelan, WA where he taught school and returned to Montevideo in 1962. He taught business classes at Montevideo High School until retiring in 1994. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as president of the congregation. Sherman was a member of the VFW and served as commander for one year. He was also a member of American Legion and the Masonic Lodge. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years and was awarded the Silver Beaver by the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed reading, hunting, scouting, and walking. He also enjoyed traveling and was able to visit Norway, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Alaska, Korea, and Japan.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Boraas, three sons: Kirk (Renee) Boraas of Chanhassen, MN, Chris (Connie) Boraas of Ramsey, MN and Tim Boraas (Patricia Schlegel-Boraas) of Omaha, NE; eight grandchildren: Elise Boraas, Maria Boraas, David Boraas, Sarah Boraas, Megan Boraas, Alexandra Perkins, Lauren Schlegel-Boraas, and Mikayla Schlegel-Boraas; and extended family and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters: Eunice Johnson and Audrey Rice, a niece, Carol Bruns and brother-in-law, Dick Soiseth.
