Jule Olson, World War II veteran, farmer, heavy equipment operator and lifetime resident of Montevideo area, died on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 in Stillwater, MN age of 87. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 10:30 AM. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Christopher Lieske officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday afternoon and evening with the family present from 5 - 7 P.M. and with a prayer service at 5:00 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Jule Louis Olson was born on the family farm in Leenthrop Township of Chippewa Co., MN on August 22, 1924 to Allen and Rose (Kling) Olson. Allen was the son of immigrants from the province of Skane, in Sweden; Rose was the daughter of immigrants from Alsace, France and Germany. Jule attended District 27 public school, about two miles from the farm, through eighth grade. There was no chance of him going to high school because there were no school buses at that time and the family could not afford room and board in Montevideo. After graduating from eighth grade, he worked full-time on the farm until he turned 21, in 1945. In that year, he was drafted into U.S. Army and did basic training at Camp Walters, Texas. He was convinced he was going to be sent to the front lines of World War II, but he was not. Instead, he attended prison guard school in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and then served as a prison guard for American prisoners of war at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He enlisted in 1946 for a year, and was honorably discharged in 1947. He returned to work on the farm. Jule went into road construction, working for the Minnesota Valley Improvement Company from 1952 to 1954. In 1953, while working on a project in northwestern Minnesota and boarding with Lillian and Winnie Shaide in Borup, he met Valborg Gudrun Holm (a cousin of Lillian) who had recently returned to the area where she had grown up after living in California, Nevada, New Jersey and Texas. Jule and Valborg were married on March 8, 1954 in Sisseton, South Dakota and settled on Jule's family farm. Jule was a member of the fourth generation of Olsons to live on the farm that was purchased in 1881 by his great grandfather Olaf Jonsson - a farm that stayed in the family exactly 100 years. Jule and Val raised four sons on that farm, until they left farming and built a home at 1644 North 4th Street in Montevideo. Jule returned to work at the Minnesota Valley Improvement Company from 1971 to 1972, and then worked for Duininck Brothers, Inc. from 1976 until 2002. In the mid-1950s, Jule attended confirmation classes with his mother Rose and both were confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church of Havelock Township, where he remained a member until moving to Montevideo in 1971. They were both members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Montevideo until their deaths. In his younger days, Jule enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and traveling. He drove by car - usually with Valborg - to many parts of the country including Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Nevada and South Carolina. Throughout most of his life, he enjoyed playing cards (his favorite game was pinochle) and putting together jigsaw puzzles, especially with Valborg, his children and grandchildren. Jule is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law: Jeffrey and Karen Olson of Northfield, MN, David and Josephine Olson of Takoma Park, MD, Gary and Lynn Olson of White Bear Lake, MN, and Neal Olson and Amy Wilton of Hope, ME; nine grandchildren: Scott (and wife Amy), Pamela, Jennifer (and husband Tim), Daniel, Emmaline, Hannah, Joshua, Emma and Nigel; four great grandchildren, Kaitlin, Thea, Finn and Dylan; a brother Royal (and Norma) Olson of Montevideo; three sisters: Leona Lyngen of Montevideo, MN, June Krogstad of Granite Falls, MN and Dorothy Larson of Mesa, AZ; as well as by a number of nieces and nephews. Jule was preceded in death by his parents Allen and Rose; his wife Valborg in January of 2012; and a brother Dwain Olson in December of 2011.
