LaVerne “Tubby” Tise, of Montevideo, died on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at the Chippewa County - Montevideo Hospital at the age of 90.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Montevideo. Fr. Jim Devorak will be the celebrant and burial will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:30 - 7:00 P.M. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M.
LaVerne Albert Tise was born March 8, 1914 at Saskatoon, Canada to Joseph and Mary (Borget) Tise. He grew up in Melrose, MN and graduated from Melrose High School in 1930. Tubby moved to Montevideo in 1937 where he purchased and operated a tavern. Tubby was united in marriage to Lucille Collins on August 27, 1942 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. He served in the US Army from 1942 until 1946 in the Pacific Theater, including on Iwo Jima. He returned to Montevideo and purchased Jeb’s Café on the south end, in 1949 he moved the café to the north end and finally built Tise’s Café in 1961. Tubby retired in 1979. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and the Golf Club. While in business he sponsored bowling and softball teams. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, dancing, hunting, and socializing.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille; one daughter, Cheryl Zawicki of Claremont, CA; one brother Clyde Tise of Melrose, MN; and two sisters: Alma Sandbrink and Delia Lemm both of Melrose, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ervin Tise; and five sisters: Helen Tise, Irhma Tise, Leola Tise, Maretta Schneider, and Lorraine Hall.
